1st Trimester

um, what?!?

So I was just doing some reading re: things to know when you have a baby, and along came a little blurb about the umbilical cord.  Um, I had no idea that it comes home with you and falls off at some point.  That is gross and I have no idea what I'm going to do when it happens.  ILK.

  • Ummm..yeah. Its not like they can cut the whole thing off. Its just a little piece, like an inch or two. Its not a big deal and in the big scheme of gross things to deal with when you have a baby, its pretty minor.

  • you didn't know that the baby's cord has to fall off?
  • It's really not that gross. It's a small dry stump. No big deal. You're going to be dealing with MUCH "grosser" things in the next few months ;)
    CP 3/07
    BFP 5/07 - Kylie born 2/08.       BPF 2/09 - Alexandra born 10/09.
TTC since 8/13 - diagnosed difficulty conceiving due to LP defect. Took vitamin B and Vitex Berry to help lengthen.
BFP 2/14 - Missed M/C found at 8.5 weeks. D&C at 9w2d. Partial Molar Pregnancy.
    BFP 11/14
  • :) You'll pick it up with a tissue, and your baby's belly button will be nice and clean!  (It is a little strange though.)
  • For reals? You're just finding that out? Are you prepared for the other "gross" things that babies do?
  • Yeah sweetie it falls off like a couple of days later.  No biggie and it's not very big.

U could always frame it...   I have heard horror stories with pets and thinking it's jerky.  Sorry pretty gross

LOL Or, you could be like 1/2 my friends where the stump fell off and they never saw it fall off or found it! haha. One friend assumed her dog might have eaten it.. now that's gross ;) LOL

  • Yeah, it's a little gnarly looking (and there's some special care until it falls off) but I'm sure you'll be too busy with how cute the rest of your baby is to notice  :)

    Ick!

  • Wow... I'm glad you're doing some reading, then.

Where's the link to that placenta-attached-til-it-dries-out method that Blair posted the other day? The one where you carry it around in a cloth? That'll really gross this one out!

  • I have heard some parents save it Ick!
  • omg. i do not have words.

    actually, i do.

did you know you have a fat wad of mucus plugging up your cervix, and that before the baby is born it will come out, and my sister says it looks like the most giant bloody booger. that comes out of your vagina. i bet you think that's super gross too huh?

  • You mean you're not doing a Lotus Birth???? Surprise
  • True story:

My cord fell off onto my parents' pizza (I have never asked how that actually came to happen), and dear old dad almost thought it was a piece of sausage.

And yeah, you're gonna deal with a LOT nastier stuff than that.

Think projectile vomit and poop that manages to work its way all the way up to your DC's HAIR.

To be honest, if I didn't have a little sister that was 17 years younger than me, I probably wouldn't know about a lot of baby stuff either.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.  You always find a way to deal with gross things.

  • Are you really that naive? Just wait until you hear about all the other gross stuff (like deliverying the placenta after the baby, bleeding for 2-6 weeks post partum, dealing with baby poop/pee/vomit, etc.).

  • What are you going to do when you have to spray down the stitches in your vag from where your baby's bloody head ripped you asunder? Surprise
  • wow, there are a few other issues bigger than that you will have to deal with.  You will freak out then i'm assuming if you poop while delivering.  Good luck when you lose your mucus plug.

Oh Honey, did they scare you?? Sunshine your in for some rude awakenings, read Belly Laughs by Jenny McCarthy. It will take some of the shock out of what you have coming to you.

  • *smacks head*

and you might poo when you deliver too.

  • Indifferent its a hole in their body.. it needs to "scab" for lack of a better term and fall off... hmmm

I tore so bad and carried that damn water bottle around for a few days b/c it hurt to wipe. Oh the joys!!!!

What about when your showering and you feel like somthing is falling out of you and you look down and there is a wobbly peice of bloody gunk the size of 2 hardboiled eggs on the shower floor. I freaked out! I asked my DH to come and look because there was something in the shower and I didn't know what it was. He said, "ew....what is that?" I said I don't know? Then he went to get close to poke at it and I said, "that just came out of me!" He almost barfed. This was 2 weeks after I had DC!!!

Actually, to be honest, I had no idea either! I just thought they cut close to the belly. I don't think that's really "common knowledge" - you would have to ask, read about it in a book, or have someone who gave birth tell you this. But this hasn't come up in any conversations with friends of mine! LOL
