Parenting after a Loss

Ugh! What are the signs of a concussion?

Yianni and I are all alone today.  DH is in Miami until 7 p.m.  I have some weird flu/GI problem/who knows.  I have been throwing up and the other end business, too.  I feel like I have a bunch of illnesses rolled into one.  Maybe it's the coming off the Lexapro and a virus???  Bad meatballs from last night?  DH had to a GI incident but right after we ate.  My dad came over to help in the morning, but now I'm on my own.  Typing this post is a huge effort.

Yianni is super active today.  I've tried everything, exersaucer, bouncer chairs, crib, swing, etc.  Finally, I put a blanket down on our area rug and let him sit up and play with a toy.  I was sitting right there with him.  He fell backwards on the area rug and hit the back of his head hard.  Our area rug is 1/2 an inch thick on tile.  Yikes.  He cried for a little, then he became his usual happy self.

I called DH and told him.  He said if he can track objects and his head isn't swelling, then he should be okay.  I remember reading about all of the stair falls last week.  Please assure me Yianni will be okay.  What should I be on the look out for?  He vomits periodically anyway, so I don't think this will be a sign.

Also, I'd appreciate tips on what to do with an active baby when you are sick.

Re: Ugh! What are the signs of a concussion?

  • This EXACT thing happened to Avery a month or so ago. It was AWFUL -- I actually heard the crack when her head hit the floor!!?

But she was fine. She was a little clingy the rest of the day. But she never threw up and her pupils looked normal. I can't remember the rest of the things to look for.

I just wanted to send you big hugs and tell you I've been there. And I hope you feel better!

Do you have a jumperoo??? DD is also very active and she LOVES hers. She'll jump for an hour in there!?

  • Thanks, Andra.  I needed some reassurance.  I definitely need to get a jumperoo.  We looked at Target, but they looked like exersaucers.  What kind do you have?  Do you have the one that attaches to the door?

  • I can't help signs to look for, but just remember that their little bodies are practically made for all the spills and falls they'll take in the next couple years.  Now that Ben's sitting, he still topples too.

    Hope you feel better soon!

yes ours attaches to the doorway -- works best in a wide doorway. We use it between the kitchen and the family room since those are the two rooms we are in most. It's great because I can move around from room to room and not have to move her because she can see into both rooms. It is an evenflow smart steps. My MIL got it online. I think it was either target.com or walmart.com.?

  • My neighbor very much accidentally dropped her baby on his head last year.  At the hospital they told her that the fact that he cried right away was a good sign.  It sounds like Yianni did that.  And I agree that tracking is a good sign.

I was an adult at the time and I got a mild concussion snowboarding and it was awful.  All I could do was lay there and I didn't care about anything.  I was throwing up but I didn't even care enough to be in the bathroom or not get it on myself.  I was totally out of it for about 48 hours.  So that was just a mild concussion.  I don't know if baby concussions are different than adult concussions but you'd notice if he were as out of it as I was when I had mine.

Thank you.  I keep thinking of Skat's reply last week indicating they are made of rubber.  Hope so.

Thank you so much for your reply.  The crying reassures me and especially since he stopped not too long after.  He's napping now, but this is his usual afternoon nap.

  • Oh no I am so sorry you aren't feeling good and so sorry he got hurt.  I am sure he is fine just give him some extra love.

  • our pedi said as long as the fall wasn't 2x their height then they are ok. a firm crack on the head from a sitting position shouldn't cause a concussion.

but what to look for: uncontrollable crying (will be constant) or whining. not wanting to play, inability to grab objects acurately (if they were able to do so before). rubbing the head a lot and moaning (as if they had a headache) and substantial inability to perform normal feats (walking, crawling, rolling, etc.)
