I will start this by saying I have only ever had cats and have never had the experience of pets as kids....
My aunt is a single, no kids, late 40's lady. She has a dog as "her kid". It is my biggest pet peeve. Whenever I tell a story about my son around her, she tries to counter with a story about her dog. I have no problem with people considering their pet a part of their family, but they are not the same as a child. Do not put your dog into the same category as my actual child.
Flame away.....

All your aunt knows is her pets as children. This would not bother me. Animals are like children to some people. You know the difference but how could she?
My pets are my fur babies & although I will love my baby in a totally different way I will still give my pets as much love and attention as they need.
have you ever thought that just because someone doesn't have a human child, doesn't make them any less of a parent? I know plently of people who's pets are treated better than other's children, and if she wants to share a story with you, she feels like she has something in common with you. geessshhh.
I tell people that my two dogs are my first and second born children and this baby in me is my first 2 legged kid.
No flames from me, either!
I love my pets, I really do. However, comparing an animal to a human is just wrong, IMO. DH and I do not have children yet; we have pets. We're not the doggies' mommy and daddy. And our son will not have older fur-siblings; he will have pets, or furry friends, or whatever other designation we come up with.
And I did grow up with tons of pets.
It is sad for people who don't have kids and maybe want them. So to them there pets are like their child. We know couples that can't have kids and to them their pets are like kids. I don't hold that against them. It hurts for them to see others have a child to put their hopes and dreams into them. They will never have that. We are lucky. I love my pets but I know when my child is here that will become a different kind of love.
I don't call my dogs my children in front of people, but I do feel that way about my Lab and so does my DH. We never thought we'd feel that way.
Got her as a puppy and she and I have something special, you have to be a dog owner to understand. She knows what I feel and think, and I take care of her like a kid. Of couse a kid is different, but DUH.
