What to keep and what to sell?

In your baby journey, what baby gear did you hold onto for number two (or three or four) and what did you sell?

DH wants to sell it all and rebuy (he hates storing things).  I am not so excited by the prospect of rebuying everything.  For sure we will keep the Rainforest bouncer, but other than that, I don't know where to draw the line.

Re: What to keep and what to sell?

  • we kept a lot..  though we didn't have a lot of time to get rid of things..  I think it depends on how long you plan to wait between kids..  If you are thinking #2 soon I would keep almost everything...  If it's going to be several years, then I would let some of it go..  We are rebuying the basics (some bottles, pacis, burp clothes, swaddle blanket, etc)..  The first set got a ton of use and is really worn...

  • We are keeping nearly everything big (swing, bouncy seat, etc.). I have consigned and/or donated some clothes. Most of our stuff is gender neutral (besides clothes), so they will work for a potential little brother in the future. Hopefully our parents will be willing to store some of the larger items for us so we don't have to lug it across the country and store it when we're not going to be using it yet...

  • That is such a tough question.  For now I've boxed all his infant items up and put the clothing into space saver type bags labeled by size. Many items have been passed down to his cousin and I would expect that I would re-purchase those items new.  We still don't know how many years we will put between kiddos so I hate to get rid of everything.

So far I think I have decided to sell: crib bedding, receiving blankets that were not used much if at all, burp clothes that were not used much if at all, pacifiers still new in packages (he never used one), and I am thinking his swing and possibly the exersaucer, some clothing items I'm not in love with and donating those that have a little wear but still some life left.

Definitely keeping: infant car seat, bouncer, pack n play, clothing that is in good or new condition, rainforest jumper.

  • We have kept pretty much everything.  I've donated some clothes but not the really cute ones, in case we have another girl.

  • I sell most all clothes (unless they are unique, one-of-a-kind items) for the simple reason that I LIKE TO SHOP, and will certainly want to shop some more when/if we have a #2 (even if it is another girl).....not to mention that styles change and it's already been almost 3 years since she was born.

I have kept most of the valuable/pricey baby gear....although I'm getting closer and closer to wanting to sell it because I am sick of storing it. Mainly because the stuff was not only expensive, but some of it a pain to assemble. And also because that just isn't the KIND of stuff I like shopping for.

I have also lent out quite few of the larger items....kind of on a "I'll let you know if I ever want it back" basis.

  • DH said that anything under $50, we'll probably rebuy.  As time goes by and #2 may never happen, then we would eventually get rid of stuff.  Right now...we have a large storage room and so it doesn't bother us too much.  We have a swing, 2 bouncers, jumper, exersaucer, walker, pnp, and a bunch of the large toys.

  • I kept everything for the second baby.  The only item we didn't use at all the second time around was the Bumbo seat.  However it was super easy to re-use most of the stuff since our two are the same gender.

Despite keeping all the clothes, I was surprised by how few of them I chose to re-use.  Many things just reminded me too much of Sarah and I felt funny having Elizabeth wear them.  The girls have different personalities and identities so I wanted them to have their own clothes.  DH laughed and laughed at this justification for buying more baby clothes when there were tons of clothes in boxes in the closet!

  • We kept everything.  Julia does have some new clothes, but even most of those are Elena's hand-me-downs.  And everything is going back into storage.  If we don't have another, it will go to my sister who's ttc now.

just didn't make financial sense to us to get rid of any of it.

  • Everything we bought was gender neutral because we didn't know the sex so we kept it all to reuse. ?I have to say I'm really glad I don't have to worry about buying any of it this time around. ?All I've bought so far is some new bottles, swaddle blankets, and pacifiers. ?
  • We are keeping everything, pretty much. I have boxed up all his clothes even. Most of his clothes are pretty basic. Polos and kahki shorts/jeans. So, no need to sell and rebuy if we have another boy... I will sell/donate everything after we are done with all kiddos.

  • I kept everything that I bought... swing, pump, nursing stool, bassinet and some other stuff.  I had borrowed some stuff and I gave it back when I was done (so she could give it to her SIL). Most of the stuff that I have stored has actually been out on loan for quite a while and just came back. I'll probably loan some of it out again even though #2 is already on the way.

Oddly enough, we're back to using the bumbo every day. DD rediscovered it and loves to sit in it and watch TV and that's where she sits while I fix her hair in the mornings.

  • I think it depends how soon you want #2.  but then again, sometimes thing happen.  I'm all about holding onto stuff and DH isnt, so I understand.  It is amazing how the gear changes from year to year, not that it gets better just more bells and whistles.  If you have the room, why not store it?  If you need cash now, then sell.
  • We kept everything. We are reusing most for Abby. I kept all of Reagan's clothes but we have of course received some new ones and I expect to buy some new ones for Abby as well but there are so many of Reagan's that were barely worn. We also know that we are expecting to have more kids in the future and most items that we have are gender neutral. For us it doesn't make sense to buy everything all over again for each kid.
