2nd Trimester

"you're carrying like it's a..."

I had a checkout person and a random stranger tell me today that it must be a boy because of how I'm carrying.  I was fine with that.  My MIL told me I was carrying like it was a girl and I have to admit I was offended.  My interpretation of the stereotypical boy/girl carry is that boys supposedly carry like a basketball and girls carry all over.  I'm in no way saying that's true (so girl moms don't get all up in arms) but is anyone else irritated when someone says they're "carrying like it's a girl"?

(Admittedly my MIL could tell me I was the most tall, thin, beautiful woman she's ever laid eyes on and I'd probably find a way to be offended...)

Re: "you're carrying like it's a..."

  • No because before our big u/s I told DH it was a girl based on the shape of my belly. I don't think it necessarily means you're carrying all over, just girl bellies are generally wider, boys are more out front, IMO.

  • ha ha; i have always thought "carrying like it's a girl" is HIGH right below the boobs and a boy is LOW right above the pelvis.
  • I haven't gotten any of these lovely comments yet. But I'm sure they will start as soon as my belly passes my boobs (like, any second now). I'm not looking forward to it.

  • People are idiots. That's what you have to keep in mind. No matter how you are carrying, how big you are or what day you are due, people are still going to be idiots and 50% of the time they are wrong :)

  • I only got irritated with one BRU checkout person who kept insisting the baby was a boy.  And this was after our big u/s confirmed my intuition that yes, the baby was a GIRL.  Regardless of that fact, this checkout person would not be dissuaded.  I was never so glad to get out of BRU in my life.  But quite frankly, total OWT -- comparing my bump with DD to this one, they look exactly the same.   I'm carrying exactly the same way regardless of the sex of the baby.

Is that your MIL's interpretation of carrying like a girl too?  Because I've heard so many OWT's and so many of them contradicting each other, I don't even think I have an interpretatioin.

Although, this one lady at my church claimed to have known I was pregnant before I told her and that it was a boy.  She said she looked down at me from the choir stand and saw that I was bigger in the boob area and she knew I had recently lost weight.  She said carrying in the boobs means boy, I'm naturally well endowed but I thought all pg girls boobs grew.
