Holy Leg Cramps...

All the sudden I have been getting these awful cramps in my calf.. I can hardly walk..  It really hurts..  Has anyone had this happen while pg?  I've tried stretching, but it doesn't seem to help..  any advice?

Re: Holy Leg Cramps...

  • Make sure you're getting enough water, you may also want to try a pickle or something salty to help with the cramp..  I had cramps in my legs when pregnant last time, haven't had it yet with this pregnancy (18weeks).

    good luck.

  • I get bad calf cramps as well, especially toward the end. ?I've heard water and potassium can help. ?Try to flex your foot when one comes on. ?That ends the cramp immediately for me.
  • I got leg cramps during both pregnancies.  It hurts!  Ditto what the previous posters said.  You can try increasing your potassium by eating bananas and OJ - I've heard that's supposed to help.

  • I'm 34 weeks and up until a couple weeks ago I was getting them too. I think bananas do work because I've eaten a few in the last couple weeks and the cramps have gone away.

this is what i do, but i pusht my heel down, instead of my toes out.  i read that somewhere, and it helps end it immediately as well.  pointing my toes out didn't.

  • The foot flexing worked for me as well.  As soon as I felt a cramp, I would flex my foot and that would stop it.
  • Pushing heel down and pulling toes up helps.  Pointing toes makes it worse, at least for me.

I only get them at night.

  • i get them really bad as well. i did wih T and just started again a couple weeks ago. it sucks. flexing my heel doesn't even work, i have to get out of bed and step down. my foot literally locks up and only putting my weight on it will move it. i also develop RLS when i'm pregnant. i was getting a pedicure the other day and my leg wouldn't stop shaking! being pregnant is freaking tough!

  • I get them at night while sleeping.  As soon as I feel one coming on, I immediately flex my foot and hold it - that helps a lot.  Maybe some more potassium?  Bananas?
  • Wouldn't you know it, I got one last night that I didn't catch in time and it traveled up to my gluteus maximus.  I have a sore butt cheek today.  Nice.

  • New studies show that drinking a glass of milk before bedtime can help reduce leg cramps as well.  I guess the extra calcium helps with the biologic function of opening and closing parts of the membrane in the muscle cells.
