-So Delicious coconut milk yogurt -Rice Dream Vanilla or Coconut Milk Unsweetened when I need to bake/cook with milk -Premium Select Chocolate Sorbet (any sorbet really, but this one's great) -Earth Balance dairy/soy free butter -Daiya shredded cheese (dairy/soy free) -Enjoy Life brand chocolate chips/cookies/etc. -water for oatmeal and farina
That's about it for substitutions. Take your time going through Whole Foods - there's tons of dairy free/soy free options for just about anything you want. I found a lot by reading some blogs which focus on finding substitutions - google "dairy free soy free substitutions" and you'll get a lot of information. It takes a bit to get used to...and I have a loooong list of what to eat on my first day back to dairy, but I treat it like alcohol while pregnant - just something I have to do without for now....
I have been dairy/soy free for three months now, and I agree with everything that PP said. I have been eating 2 packets of Quaker Apple Cinnamon oatmeal in the mornings (because most of the other flavors have milk in them...like the brown sugar flavoring..UGH). For lunch I usually eat a sandwich of some kind with regular kettle cooked chips (most of the flavored chips have soy or milk). Then for dinner I eat a protein, steamed veggies and a potato. The Earth Balance "butter" is awesome, but I have not had the same experience with the rice cheeses...they just do not melt the same. The Enjoy Life cookies are my favorite and a great treat at the end of the night. Just think positively...if you do the dairy/soy free thing the healthy way then you will probably lose your baby weight pretty fast!!
Are you in the US Christine&Chris? I checked Oreos and Duncan Hines in Canada (where I am) the other day and the cookies had milk and the cakes had soy. I might have to send an order to my cousin in Detroit!
Yep - Chicago. I know the Oreos here are...and with the Duncan Hines, it's only certain cake flavorings. I know for sure here the traditional Yellow Cake and Spice are dairy free.
