So I havent eatten beef in 20 years. I started eating chicken and turkey in my 1st pregnancy 2 years ago and had no adverse reaction. Any nutrition nesties know anything about beef and if it would do more harm than good to eat it while pregnant?
I'd say that not eating it for so long may cause it to upset your stomach. I haven't eaten red meat in 8 years. It looks good lately, but I'm scared to eat any for fear of it making me sick.
Start slow. Not eating red meat for long periods of time causes the little bacterias in your stomach that help break it down to die off (hence the gastrointestinal distress a pp mentioned!). A nibble off of someone else's steak here and there for starters is usually the best way, or just cook eensy steaks at home. Actually a good burger or hamburger meat in pasta sauce might be an easier way to start. Living in a hippie town I've seen a few people have to wean themselves back onto an omnivorous diet due to health reasons (not the most thorough in cooking nutritious veggie meals, obviously)
I understand exactly what you are saying. My brother doesn't eat any red meat. He accidently ate some ground hamburger in beans last year and got really sick to his stomach. He ate a whole bunch of it, got really sick, and then found out it had ground beef in it. Go slow.?
i'm just curious - are you anemic at all? i'm not a red meat eater either and when my blood tests came back slightly anemic, the first thing my doc said was to eat more red meat. a big adjustment for my diet but i'm trying to get my dose of red meat in (cheeseburger's my fave so far!) at least 2x a week now. are you taking iron supplements??
Re: Eating beef after its 20 yr absense
I stopped eating beef 20 years ago too, and the few times (pre-preg) I tried to eat it it gave me awful abdominal cramps.
I'm sure it wouldn't have any real adverse effect on you other than potential discomfort while you get your system used to it again.
