I have read that it's good to start at 6 months. Baby Einstein has a first signs DVD. It's recommended that you start with the signs for milk, more, eat.
We started at 6mos (not signing back yet though at 9mos) and used the Baby Einstien signing dvd to get us all started. It gives a good dozen or so ASL signs. From there, now that we are super comfortable with those it just seems easier to go to aslpro.com and get more signs as we need them.
I love doing it with her even if she hasn't reciprocated yet. It actually feels unnatural to say 'milk' in any normal convo (w/adults even) w/o doing the sign for it lol.
I started with a few signs around 4 months...the sign for fish and dog
because those are two things she had constant interaction with. the
fish in our tank were/are a constant source of relaxation and enjoyment
for dd since she was born. I am using the book Baby Signing 123 by
Nancy Cadjan. It does a great job of explaining the when, why, and how
and gives easy to use photos of the ASL signs. DD is now 10 mos and we
use signs for Mama, Papa, all done or all gone, hello, good bye, and I
love you. She has not signed back yet. I try to use those signs when
ever I can. It will be great once she signs back but I think just the
interaction alone right now is good for her.
