Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Anyone have a baby that is just not a big eater?

He has reflux and ever since he has been diagnosed he has been a very fussy eater. Before the reflux became a problem he ate great. I was told to start solids early so that it would help out with the reflux. Anyway currently he is 5 months old and he only eats about 20 oz. a day but he also eats 2 Tbs. of cereal and usually about 2 jars of baby food. He has been gaining well but I just worry so much about how little he eats. If anyone else has a similar problem can you please tell me how old your DC is and how much they eat. Someone PLEASE put my mind at ease about this, thanks.

  • I was just told by pedi yesterday that I was feeding too much solids.  DC's main source of nutrition should come from his bottle/breast.  Solids are just a way to introduce new flavors and textures at this point.  So, maybe if you brought it down a knotch on the food, he'll drink more milk....?

  • My DS is 11 months old.  He doesn't have reflux, but he's never been a huge eater.  He won't drink a lot of formula and, although he likes table food, sometimes he just picks at the food on his tray and mushes it about.  I didn't really worry about it until he started crawling and cruising because he's gotten so slim from being so active.  I've started offering more snacks throughout the day.  I'm sure he's fine, but I am looking forward to seeing the ped. next month just to make sure.

  • I am guessing that my 8.5 month old gets about 20 oz. of breastmilk and 2.5 jars of food per day.  She just doesn't want more than that.

    If he's gaining, I wouldn't worry.

  • A 5 month old that eats 2 jars of baby food is a lot. My 10 month old won't even eat a jar.
  • DS eats 20-25oz formula a day and one solid meal. He eats 2 tbsp of cereal and 1/2-1 stage 1 food. Pedi said he is fine with that and even wants me to start a second meal. I was worried with the low amount of formula.
  • DD has never been a big eater. She has reflux too (diagnosed at 2 months). Before solids at around 6 or 7 months or so we had her up to 30 oz of breastmilk a day (I exclusively pump that's how I know). We're still trying to get her to eat solids and she's 10 months old. She hated purees so we had to start finger foods. She picks at it but tries things here and there. It doesn't look like she's getting much. I make sure to offer 3 meals and one snack a day. She now takes about 22-28 oz of milk a day and the rest is whatever food she'll eat. She's gaining slowly and the pedi isn't concerned. Some kids just aren't big eaters and as long as they're growing and meeting milestones, they're probably okay.
