at the risk of getting snarked-- a FOOD question

I am going out to eat tonight with some friends to a nice restaurant and looked at the menu (bored at work so may as well fantasize about food).  The thing I'd most like to order is a fettucini dish, which lists goat cheese as an ingredient. I am thinking it's a heated pasta dish so most likely cooked enough to be ok? I may ask to hold the goat cheese but it sounds good and I was wondering what you all thought...

My understanding is pasteurized goat cheese is ok, but I can't ask whether it is or not in front of my friends because we're not telling anyone yet.

Thanks, ladies!

  • 99% percent of all cheese in the US is pasteurized. I think you will be fine.

  • mmm...goat cheese.  Most likely it's pasteurized.

  • I am sure it's pasteurized, plus it will be heated.

If you're squidgy on it, order something else.

  • If you're worried, why not call and ask?
  • There's no risk of being snarked here, we always appear to be in the red alert zone of that risk scale and I for one, enjoy it.

That being said the cheese will be cooked so eat away.

  • Call ahead and ask if they use pasteurized cheeses.
  • You should be fine but if you are not comfortable just order it with out the cheese. If your friends notice just tell them that it doesn't sound good with the rest of the dish.

  • I would order something else, just in case. Does anything else sound good to you that you know is safe? Then you don't have to worry or ask questions that would make people suspicious.
  • yeah, you're probably good. a restaurant wouldnt serve something that would make you sick (well on purpose)- so they probably wouldnt give you anything unpasteurized.
  • Thanks- I called and it's not pasteurized. I guess I will have to get the dish sans cheese- not sure how much the pasta is cooked and I'll just play it safe.
  • Wow, really? Thanks for the update - I totally would have ordered it and assumed it was pasteurized. That's a good heads-up. Especially with goat cheese, I wouldn't assume that it's cooked much - often goat cheese is just mixed into hot pasta.

  • I would still eat it *gasp*
  • I called a restaurant in advance of dining with a friend the other day to ask that very question about the cheese - pasteurized or not?  It was my second dealing with a restaurant over the phone about safe-for-pregnant food and the second time I was told, "We get this question all the time."  They were happy to even double-check, without my asking.
