3rd Trimester

PSA: While it's exciting, "progress" doesn't mean a damn thing.

There are women that have been on this board that were only about 1cm dilated before they went into labor and had fast progression and vaginal deliveries.

On the other hand, while I can only cite myself, my office doc said I was 2-3cm and 70-80% effaced at my last appointment.  I wound up getting induced because they thought my fluid was low (yeah, it wasn't) a few days later.  The hospital doc put me more at 2cm and 60% effaced, but decent progress nevertheless.  The consensus was it would be successful.  While I think my induction should have been performed differently, after 15 1/2 hours on the pitocin, my labor stalled at 6cm and 100% effaced.  DD was starting to show distress and I wound up with a C-section.  All that progress and she clearly wasn't ready (she never came lower than -1).

So yeah, don't get too excited if you've made a lot of progress, and more importantly, don't get bummed if you haven't.  It means jack diddily sh*t.  Good luck, ladies.

  • I have to agree but I was still excited to hear that I was already 3cm & 70% effaced at my appt last week, yesterday I was still the same. I don't expect to go much farrther until I am in active labor.

  • Sad but true. Being dilated and effaced doesn't mean much until you are in actual labor.

  • Heh heh... Thanks for the info...

Yesterday I actually declined the internal. My doc said it really didn't matter since we had to set an induction date. He basically told me the same thing you said... :P So I figured why torture myself with great numbers... Sigh.?

  • I just posted about about no progress.  I've heard this as well -- that progress or no progress doesn't mean you will go sooner or later.  Since nothing has started yet for me, I'm at least hoping once it does it will just go fast -- even if it is 40 weeks.  Although, I really hope I don't go too far beyond my due date.
