Toddlers: 24 Months+

When did you ditch the cribs?

My twins are 22 months old and I am afraid they are starting to realize that they can climb out.  When were yours ready and was it a nightmare?  TIA

Re: When did you ditch the cribs?

  • My son will be 2 soon so we will be transitioning him into a full size bed. He hasn't tried climbing out of his crib yet, DH wants him out of it before Baby #2 comes along. I would prefer to leave him in there as long as possible, but that's not going to happen. I know there are people that have their toddlers in cribs until they are 3. Then there are people that have kids that start trying to climb out when they are 16 months (like my friend's son)!

  • My DS started climbing out of the crib a little before his 1st b-day, so we took the side off and made it a toddler bed.  We had to put a gate on his bedroom door though, and after a few nights of finding him sleeping in his doorway he gave up and stayed in bed Stick out tongue.  He was in a normal twin size bed before his 2nd birthday.
  • Thanks for the info.

Goldie_Iv~  We too have one of the beds where you just take off the side rail but I was concerned about the access they would have.  Thanks for your story it makes it sound possible.  I am guessing that the boys will play with each other also though so I am still conflicted.

Keep the info coming ladies :)

  • 20.5 mos, when she climbed out. She is sooo not a climber, so it surprised me.

The transition has gone fine. My mistake was that for 3 days I tried to lay down with her in the bed - horrible idea. Now I do what I did when she was in a crib. Read books on the couch, lay in in the bed, kisses and leave the room. By one week, she was doing totally fine. Naps are a little harder, but she's been fighting them for a while so I think it's unrelated.

  • My pedi says to keep them in the crib until 3 or until he asks for a "big kid" bed, even if he climbs out. Actually, a lot of toddler books I have read say the same thing (I know people do it earlier and it works for them, though)

We were always planning on keeping him in his crib until at least 2.5. He is capable of climbing out but hasn't done it yet. I have a crib tent waiting in his closet in case he does try.

For everything having to do with DS's sleep, my opinion is "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

  • DS will be 2 next month and is still in his crib.  He hasnt tried to climb out yet so he's staying there.  If he wasnt in the crib I'm afraid he would wander out of his room a lot
  • she climbed out months ago. we have a crib tent though. she loves her crib. she is too sneaky for a bed right now.
  • My girls just turned two and we have no plans to put them in big girl beds anytime soon.

Actually, my goal is to make it through the summer in cribs b/c we visit DH's family cottage often and we have room for two cribs there, but not two beds.

  • We transitioned Jack to a toddler bed at 19m and to a full size bed at 23m. The toddler bed transition began on Sunday night. Thursday at nap time was the worst day. It was the day he really 'got it' that he didn't have to go down for a nap if he didn't want too. Spending 2.5hrs tearing apart his room and closet was much more fun. snapped a picture of him passed out in the middle of the madness. After that I pushed his nap back to 2pm from 1pm. He needed the transition time to calm down from daycare.

My advice to you is to make them a part of the transition. Get them excited, let them help pick their beds and bedding, let them be there helping daddy put the beds together, etc... Maybe pick out a new doll bed for each of them so they can make putting their doll to bed next to their bed as part of the routine.

  • I would also get twin or full beds rather than toddler beds unless your cribs convert. It's just a waste of money imo. Plus the selection of toddler bedding is very limited.

Ditto. DD's bed converted, so we have a toddler bed, but otherwise she'd be in a twin.

  • Thanks for the continued advice.  Ours do convert.  I thought about doing the crib tent thing but they are $70each and I obviously need two.  I priced railing which is 19.99.  Score!  That will be what we do if/when we do it.  As far as waiting until 3 they would definitely be climbing out by then so I don't think that is an option for my boys.  Thanks everyone!
  • A word of caution about the rails - make sure they're for convertible cribs. The only one I could find that was for convertible cribs was $75 from BRU, but that's awesome if you found a better deal!
