Why are people always so surprised when they get attacked by a "wild" animal? regardless of how long you've cared for him and given him his Zanex and filet mignon. You don't know that chimp, he will snap on you. And he did.
I feel awful that he snapped on her friend and not her. Because, dang, lady, a chimpanzee is not a child, and chimps aren't sweet and cuddly in the wild. They have been known to kill other chimps and eat them, so it's not like this is totally out of left field.
On the Today show, she said something about how he had just eaten a sandwich and some Carvel ice cream cake, and they went outside and he was upset that they weren't going on a car ride, so she gave him Xanax and then the attack happened. She said all of that with a straight face, like it wasn't the most ridiculous sentence ever.
People owning primates-- or any wild animal-- is STUPID.
A wild animal that's been tamed has not been domesticated.
The DNA of domestic animals (doggies and kitties) has evolved to make them capable (and dependent on) living among humans. That mutation has not happened among wild animals. It should be no surprise to that woman or any of us. I'm so pis$ed about this.
I agree, I'm kinda scared of dogs and cats for the same reason. I know they are widely held and have evolved to be good pets, but there is still that underlying DNA and you really never know. This chimp was always "gentle" and look what happened? I've had friends who've had the same experience with dogs. Sometimes instinct suddenly kicks in and they snap.
I should add, that we've had dogs, cats, sheep, pigs, chickens, ducks etc. my entire life, so its not that I'm inexperienced with animals, I just have heard too many horror stories. A lot of the time this behavior is pinned on the owner's training of the animal. Do we argue the same with this chimp? I don't know, you tell me
When I lived in Florida, there was a story on the news about how many exotic animals are loose in the undeveloped areas because their "owners" got tired of them or they became too much work, and let them go. Exotic cats, all kinds of primates, an A$$LOAD of Asian and South American snakes.
You can feed a wild animal for 20 years and it will still attack you. It's WILD...just because you feed them doesn't mean their wild part won't show up. They are still wild.
Re: That chimp didn't go crazy, that chimp went chimp.

I actually stole that from Chris Rock. He said that after that tiger attacked Roy or Seigfried, one of em.
