Do I really need to prewash everything is Dreft?

We registered last weekend and DH kept asking if we were going to add Dreft to the list - it just seems weird to me to add household cleaners to our registry. We'd need to buy it ahead of time anyway to prewash the clothes before Peanut's arrival in July.

Do you really need to use it for newborn clothing and bedding?

  • Not necessarily.   You could always go with something free of harsh chemicals, perfumes, dyes etc.  Or go natural.......

  • Someone told me to just make sure you use dye-free, fragrance free detergent.  It doesn't have to be Dreft.
  • I've heard you should wash their things in a detergent free of dyes and perfumes, but that you don't need to use Dreft.  Tide, All, Arm and Hammer, etc. all make free and clear detergents.  If you switch to one of these you could wash everyone's clothes with the same detergent.

  • I have, just so everything is clean and all that when she gets here.  Soo many people touch that stuff before you buy it.  Plus, IMO, it does make the fabric a little less harsh.

Edit- I haven't used Dreft, just the regular All Free and Clear that I normally use.

  • Here is a similar question a few down:

Edit:  Never mind, I see you question is about pre-washing, duh!

  • dreft is a waste of money... unless you want to spend $$$ just for nice baby smelling clothing.

Get All Free & clear (or similar) and baby will be fine.

After a few months we switched to regular detergent for DS b/c by then we knew he did not have any issues with it - since he was rubbing up against our clothing all day long without rashes, etc.

  • Yes, you should pre-wash everything.
Yes, registering for the baby-friendly detergent is normal.

No, it doesn't have to be Dreft -- it can be any additive-free detergent for sensitive skin (see previous posts about this issue below)

Awesome, we already use Arm & Hammer without dyes and perfumes...we'll just stick with that! Thanks everyone!

  • I wouldn't pre-wash everything.  Baby might not get a chance to wear everything (I hear that happens often, especially in the beginning), and then you are stuck with them since the tags will be removed.
  • We will wash all of Elliot's clothing in All Free & Clear before he's born.

  • Everyone I know uses All Free and we compared prices last night at the grocery store and All Free is 1/2 the price of Dreft.
  • We didn't use Dreft with either baby. I buy ALL Free & Clear and use that instead.  Both of my kids have really sensitive skin and neither have had any issues.

I wouldn't prewash ALL the clothes you get, you never know what size you're little one will be. I had stuff that was too big for so long that it ended up being too hot to put them in when it actually fit.  If I hadn't prewashed it, I could have exchanged it for soemthing else.
