NBR-Anyone own an American Eskimo dog?

Dh and I are looking into getting a new dog soon and I would like to rescue an American Eskimo, I have done my research and it said that they are good w/ kids, I'm just wondering if anyone has one and what their temperment is really like, oh, and if they really are heavy shedders. (of course reading about a dog can only do so much). Thanks!

  • yourpurebredpuppy.com has lots of good info on the expected traits of different breeds.  Also check out the Pets board on the nest, I think I remember seeing a girl on there with one in her siggy.

Oh, and my dog (lab hound mix) sheds quite a bit but we use the Furminator on her and it reduces the shedding a lot.

  • We have a Husky....I think they are along the same lines temperment wise....they are supposed to be great with kids, she's really hyper....active but a real love to be around.  She never has a doggy smell, which with my hound dog nose these days is fantastic!!  She does shed twice a year where the fur comes out in clumps, other than that it's a lot lighter than our other dog which is a springer/lab mix....her shedding is horrendous!
  • We grew up with one.. Blitz. He was amazing.
  • DH's grandmother has an american eskimo and that thing is the devil! i HATE that dog! DH has 3 nieces ages 6-4 and they are all afraid of the dog.

every time i visit she will not stop barking at me, she is very agressive and doesnt let anyone near dh's grandmother. i think she actually bit one of his nieces and has tried to bite me on several occasions.

that being said i do not think thats charictaristic of the breed and she is probably that way because she was spoiled beyond belief and his grandmother lets her get away with all that crap. i dont think she ever had her trained either.

  • Thanks ladies!

And jennanijt, I was also thinking about a husky, its good to  know that they are not huge shedders, we had a pit bull/boxer mix who died a few months ago and she was a horrible shedder, I'm just trying to avoid that if possible.

  • We have an Australian Shepherd and he is absolutely amazing with DD.  He is protective in a good way - they have a tendency to herd children but they do it safely.  His temperament is great - he has more than enough patience.  The shedding can be bad, but there are lots of things out there to help with that.
