I'm finally in my 2nd tri - yay! ?And last week, I started getting HORRIBLE headaches that won't go away. ?Docs think it's hormonal, and may last a few weeks to the remainder of my pregnancy. ?Any organic/EF treatments that are safe during pregnancy? ?So far the only solution is to take an Excedrin Migraine when I first feel the headache (about 10 mins after getting out of bed) and take a Tylenol plus Codeine if the pain doesn't stop.

?
Re: EF/organic headache "cure" that's safe during PG?
I know ginger is bad in the first tri, but are you safe with it now? If it is okay, try a pinch of powdered ginger in a glass of water. I have no idea why it works, but if I do that at the very onset of a migraine (and I'm talking a ten minute window here, so not much), it'll prevent the pain from getting worse on a pretty regular basis.
What about rubbing peppermint oil on your temples?
Also look into ways of stretching the muscles in your neck and back; again, it's not a cure-all, but any tension there always makes headaches much more frequent and much worse for me.
Feel better!
Mother's Day, 2011
i got those headaches when i was about as far along as you are. i knew they were hormonal because they felt JUST like the headaches i get the few days before my period. while not exactly natural/organic, the thing that helped me most was a coke to take the edge off (caffeine, and sugar because i get low blood sugar easily) and then a sh!tload of water. i would take Tylenol if the coke didn't take the edge off. but the water really helps too!
it only lasted about 3 or 4 weeks for me, so hopefully it will pass for you too!
My headaches were usually because I wasn't drinking enough water. So, usually drinking a ton of water and I used a bit of peppermint oil (cleared by my OB) on my temples/back of my neck.
It sounds like your headaches are much worse than mine were though because I probably wouldn't have even considered taking anything with codeine and really only took the odd regular strength tylenol if things were really bad.
I was surprised when the midwife recommended Excedrin, too. ?I'm trying to use it sparingly, but I missed 2 1/2 days of work last week because of these headaches, and I only have 3 sick days left (plus the pain was horrible!) so I don't want to get in the habit of not stopping them before they start IYKWIM.
I am drinking tons of water, and drinking diet cokes didn't work (I've had Type 1 diabetes for 21 years so I prefer to stay away from the regular stuff - it tastes awful to me and it's difficult to control my blood sugars when I drink regular soda).
I'll check into the ginger and peppermint. ?Maybe those will help.
Thanks ladies!!?
Ugh, these headaches are awful. Luckily I didn't get many pregnant, and since I still haven't gotten my period back, and I've gotten the hormonal ones since DD was born either. Hopefully you'll get the same reprieve!
I use coke or coffee and Tylenol too at the first sign of the headache coming on. That's 2/3 of the excedrine ingredients, and skips the asprin. Other things that help me include a HOT HOT shower, rubbing my neck and the back of my head, and making sure my blood sugar stays pretty steady. Sometimes a tall glass of milk and a banana will also help stave off the migraine getting full blown. I sometimes kept snacks by my bed while pregnant. Lying down in a dark, quiet room with a warm or cool compress over my forehead and trying to nap sometimes helps too. I've noticed that now that I don't have caffiene on a regular basis (quit regular coffee while pregnant) I don't get as many headaches. When I do have regular tea or coffee for several days in a row, they start coming back. So I think that can be a trigger for me.
I remember those! I called off sick because of them. =( I'm so sorry.
Try peppermint oil. It helped me a little. Gave the tylenol that extra "oomph".
