1st Trimester

Heard a heartbeat but dates are off

I had my 1st ultrasound today and according to LMP and my O date, I should be 8 weeks and due Oct. 19th.  Today the baby measured 7 weeks and the Dr. changed my due date to Oct. 28th.  I'm confused.  I don't know if I should be concerned or not.  It's not like I don't know when I conceived.  I charted very carefully and we haven't hardly had sex since I O'd.  Is it possible the ultrasound was wrong?  Anyone else had this happen before?

Re: Heard a heartbeat but dates are off

  • IMO, it's just a date.  They're only a week apart.  Babies come when they're ready anyways, not when the actual "due date" occurs.  Can't imagine there's anything to worry about ... Huh?

  • Thanks for the compassionate response. I m/c at 8 weeks last pg and I'm 8 weeks and 1 day today according to my chart.  So to measure a full week behind is a little unnerving.  I'm sure things are fine but I'm allowed to be concerned.

  • No worries.  There are lots of variables and it is just an estimate.  You are talking about a matter of millimeters measured through a blurryish ultrasound.  You also could have just had a late implantation.

  • I understand your concerns.  From what I've read, early u/s can be 4-5 days off on dating.  Add a late implantation to that and you have your week difference.  It doesn't guarantee that everything is okay, but it does give you a rational reason for believing so.  ((((hugs))))  Getting to and past the milestone where you lost your last pregnancy is really scary and difficult.  I know it certainly was for me.

    This.

And I'm compassionate, but you shouldn't majorly stress your self over really unimportant, not stressful stuff.  Keep yourself healthy and calm - that is best for the baby.

    Good luck!!   T&P's!!

  • Don't worry about a thing!!! My sister's due date with her second changed multiple times, almost with every ultrasound. The baby had an original due date of June 27th, then it was moved until July 4th and kept going back and forth for some time. The baby was born July 8th and that was after being induced and he is a beautiful and healthy baby boy. Hang in there, this happens some times!!!!

  • I know it is hard but try not to worry! I measured a week behind with an early u/s with DD#2 and I was worried sick.  Well I went back 10 days later and she was measuring 2 days ahead!  I learned that if the OB is not worried I try not to worry.  My Dr. told me that a couple days make a big diffence during early u/s.  Plus you could have implanted later which is what we think happened with me.  Good Luck:)

DS measured 5 days off at 8 weeks, 6 days off at 10 weeks, and 7 days off at 13 weeks.  The last two were taken using the newest ultrasound machine on the market at a perinatologist's office.  He is sitting next to me eating lunch and is now 95 percentile for height and weight!

For that matter, all of his ultrasounds say something like 8 weeks, 1 day +/- 2 days.

  • Thanks you guys, for the reassurance.  I need to calm down and take my OB's confirmation that all is ok to heart.  I won't have another u/s until 18 weeks, so I get to sit tight for awhile.

Totally allowed.  You are pregnant and a little bit stressed.

  • That happened to me the first time. I went for an u/s due to spotting at 8w5d, and baby was doing just fine but only measured 7w1d.  So they changed my EDD and everything worked out!
