How do I get MIL to stop saying...

"cockie" (sp?) to DD?  She's not going to take it well.  She's one of those "We did it & our kids came out fine, so you need to do it too" people.  I don't want my kid going around saying "crap", "turd" or "sh*t" when something is dirty, and I don't want her calling it "cockie" either.  "Yucky"=ok, "cockie"=not ok.

    Ok, sorry.  Maybe it's just a hispanic thing?  I have no idea how to spell it, but cockie=poop Huh?  His family says it when they don't want the baby to touch something, like it's yucky.  But it means poop.

    I think it is a european thing.  My background is Serbian, and a slang term that we use is "kaka" or "kaki" for poop.  I think that is what she is saying.  I think that it is up to your husband to set them straight to how you want to raise your child.  I personally do use the term (and work in an industry that works with the company CACI and I laugh my head off about their company name) but if you don't want it used, your MIL should respect your wishes.

    I assume she means "cocka" (sp) and it's similiar to sh*t, in spanish or Italian, I can't remember which one.

    And your MIL is saying that to your kid?? I would set some rules when it comes to appropriate language in front of your LO. I sure don't want DD's first word to be poop!

    Ok now I understand well if it is something that you don't her using then I feel like it is up to your DH to say something to her about it, after that stick to your convictions regarding this issue.

    Yeah, I think I'm stuck either tolerating it or being the bad guy on this one.  DH really doesn't care one way or another (or should I say, he doesn't care PLUS he knows it's not worth the drama with his mama it will cause), and MIL is probably going to pull the "it's cultural" card.  Maybe I can be passive-agressive & start saying "kaki" to her in front of other adults Stick out tongue

    I can relate to this.  My IL's reference going #2 as dukie to all the grandchildren.  It drives me nuts and I don't want my DS going around saying this, IL's seem to think it's cute.

    I'm also trying to find the right time to bring it up without hurting any feelings.

    OK. this post had me so confused for a while.

     The term your MIL uses is "caca"  yes it means poop and its bad.  Its such a cultural thing that it may not be worth fighting over.

    But, if you really want to stop MIL and everyone else from saying it then just correct them but direct the conversation to DC.

    "no, its not caca, its just bad/dirty/hot/etc...dont touch it".

    Only problem with this (and I don't know if OP has this same issue) is if the other parents don't have a problem with it, eventually it will sneak into your child's vocabulary from the other cousins.

    Ooooh, that would annoy the kaki out of me, too!  I don't like dukie as a word, either.  It's tough trying to figure out how to bring it up without insulting anyone.  My MIL will get insulted too, and she won't see what the big deal is.

    I only use kaka or kaki for actually talking about what is in DD diaper!

    It's a cultural thing. My cousins and I all grew up being told that anything we weren't supposed to touch or put in our mouths was "caca." I get that you're not a fan of the word, but I'm just saying it may be really hard for your MIL to understand why it offends you when it's something so normal to her. I also have to say that the use of this word varies very widely from country to country in Latin America. In some countries, it's the equivalent of shiiit, while in others, it's just "poop." For my parents, it falls into the less offensive "poop" category.

    I guess I'm in the minority, but I've never thought anything of "kaka" or "kaki" (Rhymes with yucky - so it made sense to me).  My SIL used it with my nephews. SHe's not Serbian or Hispanic. 

     I don't know how to get your point across, unless maybe you have DH do the dirtywork. A little different, but I HATE when my MIL calls DD "The Little Princess". I just suck it up.

    ditto this. Is she hispanic? We say thats caca or cockie like thats yucky or gross.

    Caca means poop in spanish and cockie is just a play on that.

    Weird...

    That's like my MIL that calls a dog bone a "boner". I don't think she realizes how it sounds when she says it.
