We bought a small heater for DD's room a few months ago b/c I was desperate. Her room is the coldest room in the house and literally 11 degrees cooler than whatever I set the thermostat at. It's ridiculous and I could NOT keep it warm in there.
I bought a small, Holmes heater from Target with a built in thermostat that is cool to the touch. I have loved it so far; it keeps it nice and toasty in there and I've never even really worried about it being safe. It shuts on and off all night according to the built in thermostat, really is cool to touch and shuts off if knocked over.
Anyway, last night I turned it on before bedtime, put on DD's pjs and sat down in the glider to nurse her. After a few minutes, I started smelling something...weird. Kind of a burn smell or something. At any rate, it was bad. I put her down and went to get DH. The smell was definitely coming from the heater b/c it wasn't anywhere else in the house. I unplugged it and brought it in the LR to test out, and the smell came with the heater.
Sooooo....I couldn't leave it in her room last night. She slept like absolute crap too, partially b/c the heater wasn't in there (even though I seriously cranked the heat to compensate) and b/c her routine was interrupted b/c we had to go back in there after she was down.
Anyway, I have the receipt and it's luckily within the 90 days, just wondering if anyone has any ideas about what could cause that or ideas about what else to do. At this point, I'm planning on getting another one and hoping it's ok b/c it's SO cold in there and I don't know what else I can do ![]()
Re: Smell coming from portable heater?
What did you have the heater resting on? Hardwood, carpet, a desk/table?
A lot of the smaller portable space heaters can short out really easily. We use a long floor space heater to heat C's room (our house is very old and very drafty, his room is pretty chilly) and it works well.
In her room, it was on her toybox (solid wood). It was only on for naps and at night though. When I moved it into the LR to test it, it was on carpet.
So you think it shorted out or something? Kinda blows that it malfunctions within just a few months, huh? I'm not sure what to do now...
Actually, ours does that too. However, it is only when it is shut up for quite a while and then turned back on. Our instructions say that it is normal.
Ex: I unplug DD's every time we leave the house. The other day, I plugged it back in, and turned it on. When I went to put her down for nap, it smelled horrible. I noticed that I had forgotten to program it to the desired temp and it was on 90! I adjusted it, and it eventually went away.
I think it is annoying but it rarely happens with ours. I would look through your instructions and see what they say.
GL!
I looked through the instructions and there's nothing detailing anything like this. And I regularly plug/unplug and I've never smelled anything funky. It just really scared me b/c it was a strong smell.
I just returned it to Target, but they're all sold out. As well as 3 other places I went to
I have to get something before tonight.
