How to get a good deal on rental cars?

Last year we paid $13 a day when we went to hawaii, now I can only find rates in the $40 a day range!  Any tricks on getting a good rate?  Any coupons available?

  • I've gotten good deals through Costco's website.  You can also try Orbitz.

  • I've gotten good deals on priceline.  I was traveling Wed to Sat, I think, and the rates, even on priceline, for that time period were crazy.  I ended up renting through priceline for a Sunday return and got a deeply discounted rate...something like $14 a day I think.  It's all prepaid, so there wasn't a charge when I returned the car early.  Paying for the exta day ended up saving us at least $100.
  • One trick I've used in the past is to enter an extra day...sometimes the span of days that you're going will affect your rate (i.e., if you're only staying until Sunday, try entering the drop off day on Monday). I've done this and even though I'm paying an extra day, it's still cheaper than the previous rate. I've done this with Hotwire.com. It works because you're pre-paying, so there's no penalty for early drop-off. Not sure if it works that way if you go directly with the rental company, though.

  • Also, become a member of AAA if you aren't already.  We get all kinds of discounts on hotels, cars, etc.  Not to mention the roadside service which makes the membership worth it all together.
