2nd Trimester

Glucose test, am I the ONLY one?

That didn't think it was bad???  They gave me less then 8 ounces of (granted, bad) orange soda to drink, wait an hour, draw blood...

I was so worried about this because everyone I know told me it was awful, maybe that's why i thought it was easy...

Re: Glucose test, am I the ONLY one?

  • i don't know anyone IRL that thought it was bad (the drink that is).... I liked it- was like cool aid to me.  The sucky part is sitting there for an hour and not being allowed to leave/eat, etc.... the only people i have heard say the drink is bad are nesties :)

  • I didn't have a problem with it but it made one of my friends get sick, vomit and had to drink it again. I guess it depends on what type of reaction you have from it.

  • I almost threw up several times, which means you get to start all over again, so I swallowed my cookies.  The 3 hour one is the worst!  You feel like a pin cushion and get starving!
  • I think it tasts like orange soda....
  • The drink wasn't too bad, but the nurses were completely inept.  After an hour and 15 minutes I reminded them that I needed to be seen... they were suppose to call me after an hour. Then, she took my blood and realized she needed a second sample.  The second sample was taken from the middle of my arm (several inches below my elbow) and my arm is black (yes, black) from bruising... still bruised horribly after five days.  The bruises on my other arm from the first draw are starting to disappear though.  I will never let that woman touch my arm again.  Hopefully I will not need any additional testing.
  • wow. You had yours early. My doctor doesn't do it until after 25 weeks.

I thought that was early too.  My doc does it between 25-27 weeks.

  • I thought it was easy. But everyone I know IRL didn't think it was that bad either.

I posted this question yesterday as I have my test at 14wks. I also called my OB and she said that it's just an extra precaution. You can get a lot better care if you find out earlier as opposed to later.

  • The drink made me nauseous, but wasn't AWFUL.  My doc wrote directions- drink at home at 7:15 a.m., finish by 7:25 and be in office at 8:15 for 8:25 blood draw.  It was not a big deal at all.

  • I won't have mine until my next appt, 27weeks.  My doctor has me do it the same day I have a check up so that I can drink the glucose, have my regular appointment, and go back and get my blood work done.  I'm so glad I don't have to sit and stare at the lab wall for an hour!
  • I was worried too. The fruit punch drink was fine until the last ounce or two. Then DH drove me to the doctor and they took blood. The worst part about it was that I was nausea when I woke up in the morning, so that continued on the drive to the doctor.
  • Mine wasn't bad either (I went on Friday) - However, they took blood first, I drank 10oz of orange drink, waited an hour & then they took more blood...

  • The one hour isn't that bad, though this time the drink did make me nauseous - probably because I was drinking it in the car on the way to the doctor. What sucks is failing the 1 hour, and having to do the 3-hour, which I get to do on Wednesday!
