Baby REFUSES to nap

So...Sophia has decided that sleep is for pansies. :)

She refuses to sleep during the day and if she finally gives up the ghost it is maybe for 15 to 20 minutes. She is starting to sleep better at night, but since she is so exhausted by the time I get home from work she ends up going to bed earlier and getting up multiple times in the middle of the night.

I have noticed that if we get in an hour or so nap when her father gets her around 4 then she is good until about 8 and will sleep through the night, but he hasn't been able to pick her up at 4 lately because of work etc.

She used to have a great 3 nap a day schedule but she is REFUSING to go to sleep no matter what we do.

Anyone else have a non-napper? What did you do?

Re: Baby REFUSES to nap

  • How old is she now?  She may be ready to give up that third nap and shift her schedule a bit.  I'd try putting her down later for her first nap and having more time between her first and second nap.   Have you read Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child?  It gives some good advice on napping.

  • she is refusing all her naps. I will definitely have to check out the book because it is getting nuts.
  • sorry, she is 6 months. My mother swears that I was like this and my neice is generally the same way but with her we got to a point where she just went to bed early and would sleep all night. Sophia isn't. Trust me, we have tried it all.
  • Allison was just like this.  Honestly, we kind of gave up and drove her around the block to get her to nap for longer than I'd like to admit.  She'll now easily go down for a nap, though, so there is hope.  Sorry I don't really have any tips.
  • B was a non napper, and then he started napping sporadically.  When I was home for several days in a row, I kept a log of his activities to try to gauge when he got tired.  DH started following his "cues" from this log, and it helped a lot.  I think his problem was that I would do something and DH would do things completely differently.  He needed consistency.  Neither of us recline in the lazy boy, we don't turn the tv's on during the day, and we don't talk to him when we're putting him down.  We just feed him the few ozs he needs to fall asleep and we lay him down.

Now he naps twice a day for about an hour at a time.  He goes to bed around 8:30 and gets up at 6:30/7.  He eats a TON at that point (8-10 ozs of EBM) and goes back down for 2-3 more hours.  At least, this is his newest routine.  It seems to change every 3-4 weeks.

  • DD goes through periods of refusing to nap.  It gets better for a few weeks, then she will go into refusal mode again.  Her night sleep has never been affected.  Is Sophia teething?  Teething seems to make the nap times more difficult.  I really think that they are just learning, growing, and developing so quickly at her age that they are simply too busy doing and seeing to bother with sleep during the day.  It will get better!

  • No teeth yet, but she has been heavily drooling for months so I am hoping it comes soon. The problem is that she is NOSEY and thinks that she will miss something so she doesn't want to go to sleep. :)

She had her 4pm nap today and it seemed to help. She went to bed a little after 8. Here's hoping my full night sleeper comes back. :)

  • AND SHE DID!! She didn't stir until after 5 this morning. WHOOHOOO!
