It is just extra important (imo) to make sure you are using a residue free detergent. The hard water leaves minerals behind on its own, and you don't need to make it worse with residue-leaving detergent
Crunchy Clean is great! We currently use Planet because it's locally available at the natural foods co-op store.
I think you just have to give it a shot. I have very hard water and we use Ecos detergent. We used to use Charlie's but it gave Ethan a really bad bootie rash. I find that if I just do a few SUPER hot rinses (turn the water heater ALL THE WAY UP) every month-2 months, I don't get build-up and everything is fine.
