Is Omega 3 oil supplements and DHA the same thing?

I tried goggling it and couldn't find an answer. Does anyone know. I am taking a flaxseed Omega 3 supplement and wasn't sure if I also needed to take DHA (Lipil) supplements also. Thanks for any feedback?

Re: Is Omega 3 oil supplements and DHA the same thing?

  • Yup. they are essentially the same thing. DHA equals zero fish burps though (from what I hear) I stuck with DHA for both pregnancies.

  • i don't believe it's the same, but i do know that my OB told me to stop taking flaxseed after i got my BFP.  just give your dr. a call and ask......
  • the pharmacist told me they were basically the same thing.  the difference is the amount that you're getting from regular Omega 3 pills and what actually comes in the prenatal vitamins.  i'd just ask your doctor as you don't want to substitute the omega 3 on your own and end up taking too much.  plus, you don't want the fish burps.

  • I think its essentially the same. Im sticking with DHA. Under the DHA label, it says in small writing "Omega-3 Fatty Acid"

  • There can be a difference.  I am taking the Expecta Lipil DHA, which comes from plants rather than fish.  A doc friend told me that some supplements can be dangerous because there is no telling what fish they came from, so they could contain higher than desireable amounts of mercury.  Remember, supplements are not FDA-evaluated.
  • OMG, I had no idea that flaxseed oil was so bad during pregnancy. CRAP.  thanks for the info ladies. I need to start talking to my doctor before just assuming that everything "healthy" is safe to take.
