Identifying the muscles you "push" with...

Ok, I just read on the 0-6 month thread, as I have read several other places, that you push with the same muscles you poop with.  Can I just say...NO.  You are not pooping out the baby!

Our Childbirth educator had us do a very nice exercise.  Clear your throat.  The muscles you feel when you clear your throat - THOSE are the ones you want to push with.

(And given that I DID use those muscles, and did NOT poop on the table with DD, I'm agreeing with her.)

  • I didn't feel like I was pooping...I felt like I was clenching my tummy muscles, like I was preparing for someone to punch me in the gut lol. :D Whatever it was, it got Kelsey out FAST!
  • My epidural made me so numb, the only way I could tell if I was pushing at all was to push like I was pooping.  The nurse said I was pushing right when I did that.  But I had a c/s so maybe I wasn't.

  • ya i've heard people say that you use the "pooping" muscles and my friend just told me the other day "Ummm no, you use the muscles above your stomach basically."  Like from the middle of your body where they push on you and such... So I'm hoping she's right and when I'm there I can master what area this really is and use it so I don't poo on the table!

Exactly!  I had the same experience.  I did a few "practice pushes", and then DD was born 2 pushes later.

Same here.  Didn't poop and delivered her after 25 minutes of pushing like that.

  • Iris - I was pretty numb too, but I could feel enough to feel like I was kind of doing crunches??   Not the pooping though.  And not with my face!  That's the other thing to beware of!
