We just went on the tour of the Birth Center at Abott, and I have concerns, The rooms seem uncomfortably small, the chair for Dad to sleep in looks uncomfortable. They seem slow to take more natural approaches to delivery. Has anyone delivered there? What did you think? The other hospital that we could deliver at is Fairview Southdale, I think that we are going to go on a tour there too.
Re: has anyone delivered at Abott Northwestern in MPLS?
I have not delivered there personally but my brother and his wife had their baby there and really liked it.
I know that my brother slept on the chair and he is super fussy about sleeping (usually never likes to sleep anywhere but home) so it must have been ok because they do not live far from the hospital.
My SIL had an epidural fairly early on so I don't think it would be an issue if you ask for pain relief at all.
Also, they said that they really like the nurses and I would say that that is one of the most important factors for any maternity ward. You absolutely need nice/supportive/well trained nurses.
I haven't delivered there, but that is where I will be delivering. I really like the hospital and the nurses are SUPER nice!! We have friends who have delivered there and had a great experience.
Also, I think that as long as you and baby are fine, they will probably accomodate your wants to have a natural labor.
I delivered there and used to work there. It is the best hospital. We had a really great experince and I hope to deliver there again. The nurses were awesome, and very ok with whatever I needed. As for the chair/bed...that is pretty standard at any hospital. I dont think you are going to find anything different anywhere else.
I have heard horrible things about Fairveiw. I will never go to that hospital for anything.
That is where I'll be delivering. I have heard good things about it. They have a large tub for mothers trying to deliver naturally. They also have a birthing ball and squat bar in every room (in the closet). I am trying to do it all naturally as well, so I had the same concerns. I hired a doula to help me through the labor as well and created a birth plan which I will give to my midwife and the nurses at Abbott so they know what I want it labor. I bolded the part about not wanting to be offered pain meds.
I also just visited a friend there last week. She did, however, have a c-section. She said all the nurses and staff were great. She also really enjoyed the food and said you could order quite a lot (and share it with whoever was staying with you.) The bed/cot thing for your quest to sleep on does look pretty uncomforable, but she said her husband and sister slept fine on it.
I delivered there and will do it again! The nurses were GREAT. I also wanted to try and deliver without an epidural and the nurses did everything they could to support that decision. I've heard that the nurses at Southdale will really push pain relief on you. I actually had an outpatient procedure there yesterday and practically had to fight the nurse anesthetist about not being put under general!
When we took a tour I also thought the rooms were small but when it was just me, DH and the doula it was fine. We had a great view of DT Minneapolis.
I delivered at Abbott two years ago. I picked Abbott not for me, but for the baby. Abbott is literally connected to Children's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). We were not expecting any problems with the birth, and my pregnancy was uneventful. However, I did not want to be separated from my baby should anything go wrong. Southdale has a specialty care nursery, so vents are available should you baby require that for a few days. However, anything requiring surgery such as for heart defects, premature babies with respiratory problems, etc are transferred to Children's NICU (level III). I'm in health care and tend to prepare for the worst;) In the end, we did not require the NICU, but it was nice to know it was there if needed.
I did labor in the Abbott birthing tub for a few hours. I will not do that with the second. I waited until 8cm dilated before getting an epidural, nurses did not "push" medications (but let me know that they were available).
I ended up with an emergency c-section after baby's heart rate went into the 50s and did not rebound (~150s is normal). The Labor and Delivery Nurses and Operating Room Staff were efficient and reassuring even when things were not looking good. I was very happy with my/our care at Abbott. (We now have a happy, healthy 2yr old and will drive the extra distance to Abbott for the next one too)
As for the chair/beds - it's true they are not comfortable, but it will only be the first of many sleepless nights once the baby arrives;)
