ok, so if I do this (I think I can, I THINK I CAN ...) I'm going to do prefolds, snappis, and thirsties covers.
I *think* 3-4 snappis and 4 thirsties will be OK.
How many prefolds then do you think is enough? 12? 36?
What are you guys doing? AIOs? (we're not, due to bulk factor and price).

It depends on how often you want to wash. I have eleventy billion prefolds but would never go through them all before doing laundry b/c I don't like to let them sit more than a couple days! I would say 24ish (figure you'll change a newborn approx. 10x/day)
I do almost all prefolds or fitteds and have a few pockets on hand for trips out or for cd inept diaper changers!
i think the rule of thumb for newborns is 16-18 diaper changes a day. i bought 24 kissaluv fitteds, 6 thirsties covers and a backup stash of 24 prefolds mainly because i'm not very good about doing laundry very often. i didn't get any snappis because the prefolds are for backup and with the covers, you can just lay the prefold in there and fasten the cover. but i would think you wouldn't need more than 2 or 3 snappis.
once the baby grows out of the newborn dipes, i'm planning on getting the bumgenius one size pockets. probably 12 of them with a handful of hemp inserts for nighttime use. for day time use, if i need more inserts I'm guessing i can use the prefolds i have.
Hey - I am planning on doing the same thing as you. To start out with I have: 2 snappis, 2 thirsties covers, 2 bummis covers, 16 newborn prefolds, 16 small prefolds, and then I registered for 4 AIOs at Target.
I would say you need 24 prefolds to start out with. You would be doing laundry about every other day because newborns average about 12 diapers a day.
I ordered the prefolds, covers, and snappis from Green Mountain Diapers and they arrived 1 day after I placed the order. So, I am going to see how it all works out and then order more if neccessary after I've got it figured out!
I realize you didn't page me... but, I'll throw in my 2 cents anyhow.
My BFF just had her first 8-9 weeks ago and is doing this very set-up for the newborn stage and thus this is the set-up I am also planning on using. From what I have gathered from my friend and the little organic baby store where I am buying my products from, this is what I am starting out with (based on their recs):
4 thirsties covers
2 lite wraps covers (just to try another brand out, plus they're cheaper)
24 prefolds (newborn sized, if I wasn't going to try some fitteds, would get 30-36)
6-12 fitted (still need to purchase, will probably get snugglebottoms from babybunz.com)
24-36 cloth wipes (also to be used as mini burp rags)
2 snappis ( don't know if I will even use these, my friend doesn't, she just puts the PF in the wrap and velcros snuggly)
I am "hoping" this will get us to at least 3-4 months before needing to try out new sizes. My friend has just started using some insersts since baby is sleeping 5-8 hour stretches at night now. So after baby is born, will probably add 6 hemp/fleece inserts to that list.
ok, thanks girls!
I get paid today, so I'm thinking about dropping some of it on diapers once it clears the bank.
Most people seem to recommend 24-36 diapers and 4-6 covers for the newborn stage. Obviously you only need one snappi at a time, but I think a backup is a good idea.
I have 24 newborn prefolds (GMD orange), 24 fitteds for DH's sake (Snugglebottoms -- they're cheap for fitteds and people seem to like them), 6 Thirsties XS covers, some wool soakers I knit myself, and 3 snappis (one for primary use and a backup in each diaper bag). It's more than I absolutely need, but if I vastly prefer one type of diaper to the other, I can use it almost exclusively, I can use the prefolds for burp cloths as well and later as doublers, and it gives me a little leeway with the laundry if I get overwhelmed in the beginning.
I don't have anything for beyond the newborn stage yet, but I figure I'll continue to use mostly prefolds with hemp fitteds for night.
