I am so confused about this...DS is using a nipple shield and b/c of that I am not confident enough to bf in public. He is only 3 weeks - he fumbles with the shield, milk gets everywhere, etc. But now I dont' know how to leave the house. By the time he is fed, changed, dressed and I clean myself up and get ready to go, I do not even have time to get to the grocery store before it's time for him to eat again. I would like to use bottles - and I have fresh breast milk stored in the fridge from pumping. But how do I take the milk along with me...does it have to still be refrigerated? I don't have an insulated container besides the larger cooler that came in the pump which is pretty inconvenient. If it doesn't have to be refrigerated, how long is it "good" for if at all? I imagine if it gets to room temp it has to be thrown out if it doesn't get drunk in that outing? Ugh! I thought I had read up on all this but I am so lost.

Hi,
I also use a shield and it does get a little easier to manage. I've learned how to get it to stick to me better and how to block the baby so she doesn't knock it off. I make sure I have an extra burp cloth to handle taking of the shield so the milk doesn't end up all over. I make sure I bring the shield with me if I am going somewhere that I will be able to bf w/some privacy, like a dressing room or another room in someone's house. My baby has also spread out her feedings more so i have more time to get out of the house before she needs to eat again.
I'm pretty sure breastmilk is ok to be out for 4 hours. It's once you warm it up that it's no longer good past one hour.
