How to Leave the House - Using Bottles with Breast Milk?

I am so confused about this...DS is using a nipple shield and b/c of that I am not confident enough to bf in public. He is only 3 weeks - he fumbles with the shield, milk gets everywhere, etc. But now I dont' know how to leave the house. By the time he is fed, changed, dressed and I clean myself up and get ready to go, I do not even have time to get to the grocery store before it's time for him to eat again. I would like to use bottles - and I have fresh breast milk stored in the fridge from pumping. But how do I take the milk along with me...does it have to still be refrigerated? I don't have an insulated container besides the larger cooler that came in the pump which is pretty inconvenient. If it doesn't have to be refrigerated, how long is it "good" for if at all? I imagine if it gets to room temp it has to be thrown out if it doesn't get drunk in that outing? Ugh! I thought I had read up on all this but I am so lost.

  • Actually breast milk is good at room temp for 8-10 hrs....or that is what I have read.  My DD does not like milk that has been in the fridge.  It has to be room temp or warmer for her to drink it.  It can seem overwhelming in the first few weeks to get out of the house....but believe me it does get better!

  • I usually pump right before I leave (if it's not time for him to eat).  Or if it's in the fridge, I warm it up slightly just to get rid of the chill ( and use it within an hour or so).

  • Hi,

I also use a shield and it does get a little easier to manage. I've learned how to get it to stick to me better and how to block the baby so she doesn't knock it off.  I make sure I have an extra burp cloth to handle taking of the shield so the milk doesn't end up all over.  I make sure I bring the shield with me if I am going somewhere that I will be able to bf w/some privacy, like a dressing room or another room in someone's house. My baby has also spread out her feedings more so i have more time to get out of the house before she needs to eat again.

I'm pretty sure breastmilk is ok to be out for 4 hours. It's once you warm it up that it's no longer good past one hour.

  • room temp bottles can be out for 6+ hours... so grab one out of the fridge before leaving and it will be good to go on your trip out...

  • If we're taking a quick trip I make a bottle and leave it in my diaper bag. She drinks it straight from the fridge anyways. I think it's good for several hours. If we're going to be gone longer (3 or more hours) I make 1 bottle and then put a few of the storage bottles in a small insulated bag (came with the pump.)
