Oh man, the baby is so phlegmy...

He's on DH's lap and he's so full of gunk in the throat that it's hard to listen to him breathe.  Occasionally he coughs too.  I posted last night about the cough and we had already elevated the crib mattress, but what else can we do for him?  I seem to remember #1 having this same issue at 6 weeks and the pedi having us give him sips of water to try to loosen it a bit.

Thoughts on what else we can do?

  • Is it too far down to try to bulb some of it out?

It's not in his nose, it's in the throat.  DH wanted to try this and I told him not to since I always thought the sucker thing was for the nose only?  That might sound stupid...

  • Steam up the bathroom and then sit in there with him, it will help to loosen all that stuff up and then you can suck it out.  Saline helps too.

  • DS3 had reflux, and it made him really phlegmy, so the dr. said if I could suck it out with a new bulb and not have to go too far in, then go for it. Like if I could get him to cough a little up and it's in his mouth then go for it. So I would burp him for a few mins. (seconds?) and get it out

  • NEBULIZER.  If you don't have one, make an appt. with your Ped.  Coughs are nothing to mess with in a newborn.  DS is just getting over RSV and I truly believe the nebulizer has helped in him getting over it relatively quickly.  Also, saline and bulb syringe his nose constantly.  What you are hearing in his breathing is likely in his nose and is echoing into his chest.
