Low BBT? Anyone else?

I have recently begun charting to prevent pregnancy (my doc reccommends waiting couple of months after coming off the pill before TTC) and I am a bit concerned.  All of the temperature charts begin as 96.9 as the lowest on thier chart, but my BBT is averaging 96.0 - 96.9 - I don't even make the chart! I just made adjustments on the chart itself so I can still connect and graph, but is this something that I should be concerned with? I am reading "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" and am looking in there, but I also read something about hypothyroidism being related to low BBT and fertility concerns. Does this sound at all familiar to anyone else?

Re: Low BBT? Anyone else?

  • I've heard that low temp. can be related to thyroid problems as well as diabetes.

That being said, I've seen other charts with temps. that low on here before.

  • I haven't read anything on low bbt, but I'm normally in the mid 96's. Sometimes I get low 96's.

  • I think that section of TCOYF may have scared all women who have low BBT into thinking they have a thyroid issue. While it is something to be aware of course, many of us have low BBT. All my pre-O temps are sub-96.9. It's normal.

You can chart online at fertilityfriend.com and then you don't have to worry about making the chart.

  • I have had temps as low as 96.3  I would say you are fine.  If you are concerned ask your doc.  What are your temps during the day?  Do they stay that low?
  • I have several charts with all my temps ranging from 96-97, and I don't have hypothyroidism. ?How long have you been charting?
  • Just started in Dec. You ladies are awesome! Thanks for all the feedback!
  • I'm definitely not an expert or anything, but I do have hypothyroidism and I have never had a temp above 96.8. I just recently started though so I'm not sure how my temps will react when I ovulate.

If you think you may have hypothyroidism, like if you have other symptoms, then you should ask your doctor specifically because a lot of them don't test for it.

Hopefully that's not what it is though, as you can see. it's apparently more common to have lower temps than you'd think!

*Edit: Your charts are probably like that just like how some books and stuff will say the "average" cycle is 28 days and so on.

Not that this is the case for you or anything, but even though I have hypothyroidism and I wake up with low temps, they go up during the day, they don't stay that low.

Usually women with hypothyroidism have more than one symptom. Like always feeling cold/hot, appetite issues, weight problems. Low temps alone isnt enough information to diagnos for thyroid problems. And if you do have thyroid issues, and you dont have any other symptoms, then your thryoid problem is just a little off.

But ask your Dr for a blood test if you have other sysmptoms. The lest invasive way to confirm thryoid problems.

    thank you for the advice!

  • I read the same thing and was concerned when I first started charting. ?All my pre-O temps are below 97 usually. ?I have charted for 20 cycles and have no signs of other problems. ?I remember when I asked on here awhile back there were quite a few women with low temps. ?GL!

  • My temps started off in the low 96 range. Take a look at my chart.  I don't have a thyroid issue.  It may just be normal for you.
