DH at the Dr's

Hey Ladies,

Just a poll of sorts, does (or will) your DH accompany you to your first pre-natal appointment? Which ones do you feel its important that he be there for?

I have my first appointment later this month and wasn't sure what the "norm" is.

My DH is planning to go to all of them. I think it's cute that he's eager and interested, but kind of wonder if along the line he won't feel like some of the "less eventful" appointments are as much of a priority.

I had no idea what would go on at my first appt, so he skipped it. He doesn't know a lot of his family history anyway, and we thought there would be lots of Qs, but she didn't even ask one! I didn't know I'd get an u/s right there. I texted him the picture when she was done, and he replied ," WHOA, who put that in there? " Silly boy!

My first week is at 8 weeks, and the OB said they will be performing an U/S. Therefore, DH plans on being there. I assume for most appointments with an U/S, DH will try to be there.

With DS, he always came if he wasn't working. He is self-employed, so his schedule is all over the place. If they were going to do an internal, he would wait in the waiting room (I don't know why). He won't be able to go to my first one this time and I have a feeling they will do an u/s and it makes me sad for him that he can't be there.

While he doesn't need to be there, it was always nice when he did come with me. It was our thing to do : )

DH has come to the first ones and plans on being at all of them. He doesn't have to, but when we talked about it, he said that this is his baby, too, and he wants to know everything that happens, even at the boring ones. Plus he thinks that if he sees pelvic exams and vaginal u/s's-he may be a little less traumatized in the delivery room (silly DH!).

I think it's important for DH to be at all appts. so that they hear everything that the DR.s have to say, instead of just relying on information from us.

My appt. is in 2 weeks and DH will be there. Big Smile

My first appointment is next week for a 7 week u/s, and DH is leaving work for a little while to come with me (it's at 11:30 in the morning). I'm not sure whether he plans on coming to all of them, but I assume that he'll try to be at as many as he can, especially the ones with an u/s. He didn't even flinch about the time out of work when I asked if he could come to the first one, so that's a good sign.

MH went to all of them this time until I hit 29w because then I started going twice a week and he couldn't take the time off work.

With our first, he went to the first appointment, the big u/s and the one that ended up being Aidan's birthday

DH went to the first appointment when they did the u/s (he also sat through the pelvic exam....which freaked him out a bit!) He will try to come to all the other ones he can, but he's a teacher so it's hard for him to leave during the day.

My first appointment is at the end of the month. DH said he'll definitely be there for this one, and he'll try to go to as many as possible. It might be hard for him to get time off work.

My DH also comes to all of them, if possible. He travels for work, so I try to schedule a couple of appts at a time so they are far enough out that he can plan his traveling around it.

I'm not sure how necessary it is for him to be at all of them, but since this is our first baby, that is the plan!

My H went to the first appt with me and is planning to attend the 2nd apt as well. The first apt our hospital went over our insurance and financial stuff, plus gave us a run down of what the next 9 months were going to be like.
The second apt we get to do an u/s with h/b.

Dh is coming to the first u/s, and if it looks good he'll probably go the NT or CVS, but that's it. There is no reason on earth I can see for him to miss work to watch me pee in a cup, get weighed and measured. Routine OB appointments are serious snooze fests.

With DS, H went to probably 50-75% of my appts--all the major ones, plus a few others. I had my 1st appt for this pregnancy this morning, and he couldn't go because of grad school. Turns out it was fine, since all they did was bloodwork. My u/s is next week though, and he probably won't go to that one either.

My DH hasnt missed any (3 so far) even when they were just drawing blood. He has question he likes to ask just like i do. i told him i dont need him there and he can get updated when he gets home but he insists. I think it is up to you and your DH to decide what is important to you too

I told my husband that he didn't need to come to the first appointment, unless he wanted to watch me get a pap. My doctor doesn't do ultrasounds in the office so that was not a concern. He came to the first ultrasound and will go to the rest. I don't think coming to doctor appointments is necessary for him, and frankly I think he would be bored.

DH came to all the appointments with our first and plans on doing the same this time around as well. He has a super flexible schedule and isn't missing work for them, though. If he had to take time off work I'd probably vote against most of the routine ones, although would want him there for the first one for sure.

My husband only came to the appt where we first heard our sons heartbeat and then the 4 ultrasounds I had. But the monthly appts seemed kind of pointless for him to come to. I actually didn't see any husbands with their pregnant wives in the waiting room for any of them (unless they were there to wait in the waiting room with the kids). If my husband had a question I would ask the doctor and I didn't want to make him sit there while I peed in a cup or got weighed. I don't plan on him coming to any appointments this time around either.

He won't be coming to the appts. I think though that I will try to schedule our 20 week ultrasound for a day that DH is off so he can come and bring DD too.

He's going to the first and every one after that. He wants to be a part of everything and I want him to be as well, even the uneventful ones.
