Period while breastfeeding?

I thought that you weren't supposed to get your period while breastfeeding.  To my surprise today I was greeted by my old friend.  I just went back to work on Monday and my 10 week old has just started sleeping at night a 5-6 hour stretch.  I read in one of my many breastfeeding books that if you go for too long of a stretch your prolactin levels drop and your fertility hormones rise...hence menstration.  I was wondering if this has happened to anyone?  Also, does anyone pump at night even if your little one is not waking up?  I still wake up for feedings, then I see he is still sleeping, and then I go back to sleep.  Please let me know.

Re: Period while breastfeeding?

  • This is false. I've gotten my period at 6.5 months PP both times so far. It's late, but it came while I was EBF........I'm expecting it around that time this go around too.

And NO WAY did/will I wake up to pump if my baby is sleeping long stretches! I need my sleep more than I need to pump.?

  • Thanks, that is what I thought.  I would rather be fertile than wake up to pump!  SLEEP IS GOOD...finally!
  • AF returned at about 5 weeks pp and I exclusively breastfeed. It's not abnormal at all. I had it even sooner with baby #1. Also, if you go on the mini-pill, it's likely to be super irregular. I've had mine every other week since Christmas, and when I called my doctor's office her nurse told me to deal with it for a couple months and see if it normals out.

  • Even if you EBF, if you go for more than 4 hours or so between feedings, it is possible to ovulate. Hence you are fertile and can get pregnant again. Also hence the period. If your LO is STTN, then that explains you getting your AF.
