Rice cereal?

You're not supposed to start rice cereal until a minimum of 4 months right?

My mom argued with me about this and swears it will be fine because she fed me rice cereal at 5 weeks! He is not even close to ready, anyway, but she thinks I'm being ridiculous.

Re: Rice cereal?

  • some people put it in the formula.  my mom pressured me to do the same--I didn't do it.  You have to do what you feel is right.  Will it hurt the baby...no....but times have changed/things are done differently now.

  • It's an old fashioned idea to start rice cereal that early. Pedis advise AT LEAST 4 months, if not 6 months unless baby has reflux.

Your LO is getting everything he/she needs from bm/formula right now.

  • ask your pedi.

we won't start until 5.5 months.

  • it was common then to start solids very early. Now it is recommended to wait at least 4 months. ? The AAP says 6 months. ?The digestive system is too immature, not enough saliva for digestion, not enough amylase, etc. ?Not developmentally ready - the extrusion reflex should be gone before solids are introduced (built in reflex to protect baby from choking). ?Not mature enough to tell you he is satiated. ?Starting too early also associated with obesity, respiratory problems and food allergies. ?And if you're BFing your milk supply may be affected, now is the time to be establishing that - tell all that to your mom:)
  • Haha I may c&p that one to her! Jack is only 2 weeks adjusted so we aren't even close to thinking about it.

  • My mom said the same thing.  She started me on rice at 2 wks!  Shes made her snide comments but I didn't cave.
