How are you paying for baby stuff?

The poll feature is not working for me.... So??

Tax return,  credit cards, you've been saving, you are getting a lot of gifts and family's help, you are just plain rich...

Re: How are you paying for baby stuff?

  • with every single extra dime that I have! lol I haven't bought anything big... my family has helped with that. Some stuff has been given to us as well.

  • My husband and I have yet to buy anything.  But, I'm only 14 weeks, so we probably won't start buying for a while.  We're planning on saving any tax return to go towards the hospital bill.  Our co-pay for hospital stays is 10%, so we need to start saving now.  Also, my parents will be helping a lot.  It'd be nice if we were plain rich though!

  • We're buying what we can on sale and are getting a lot of luxury items used.  (ie my schmancy diaper bag and our bedding set)  We're also trying to spread out our buying so we're not hit with big bills at once.

I'd love to use our tax return on the nursery, but we'd already spent it (in the form of a parental loan) to get the baby.  Baby stuff isn't cheap, but for us the baby cost wayyyyy more.

  • We are paying for most big things - with cash. No credit cards! Or at least not ones that we don't pay off every month. Gifts are great, and we'll probably get some big things at our showers, but for the most part we're not planning on it

  • A combination of all of those except for the bit about being rich. I've saved, we get a lot back with our taxes and my sister is throwing me a shower.

  • We have a lot in savings so whatever we don't get from the shower we'll buy ourselves with money we have put aside to spend on baby things. We don't plan on buying a ton of things anyway.

  • My parents gave DH and I money for Christmas so we are putting that towards baby furniture.  DH and I put ourselves on an allowance and I plan on saving part of my allowance for baby stuff (I think DH is too).  My mom and his mom will certainly buy us stuff, however I think we are on our own for the big ticket items.

We are also in the process of looking for a new house so finances are being spread everywhere!!  Good thing DH will no longer be unemployed as of next Monday and he'll be making much more than his old job!!

  • We bought the travel system yesterday and my mom bought the crib today. We will not really buy anything else until after we see what we dont get at the shower.

  • im getting hand me downs on somethings from friends like my highchair, swing, clothing, ext. my MIL bought our crib. hoping that my FIL or my parents will get our car seats. otherwise we have been saving and hoping that the baby shower will help get everthing else.

  • FIL bought the crib for us, the dresser we paid for using the credit card. Other then that we received a TON of hand-me downs already including cloths(lots new), diapers, bottles, towels, infant carseat(new), booster seat, bouncie seat,  and we still have time to go. Many family and friends recently have had babies including my sister so we are taking what people give. What ever we don't get from my shower or hand-me downs though we will pay for with my bonus I get for being an advisor at the school where I teach.
  • We are going to use tax return and/or my bonus to get the furniture. We have also been buying some things here and there when we can combine gift cards and coupons. I have also been told that I am getting 3 showers, so I am praying for a good turnout on those as well.

Other than the big stuff, just watching the sale ads/coupons for some small stuff to stock up on.

  • 1) We put some money away last year to buffer some costs.

    2) Will use our tax return for strictly baby stuff still needed.

    3) Whatever clothes we still need after the shower will be bought at a local mom to mom sale they have in our area every few months (think huge community garage sale but all baby and toddler clothes)!

    4) Will purchase items still needed after the shower at Target and Walmart to save some $ (we registered at BRU).

    5) Will go on a payment plan with the hospital when we get our final bill after delivery (we estimate total cost will be a few thousand given our deductible and out of pocket max).

  • We are buying things here and there, tax return will buy travel system if it's not purchased as a gift.  We have received quite a few hand me downs which have been great.  We are also buying a 20.00 gift card to Walmart every week until she is born to help with some of the expenses of when we first bring her home.
  • We'll just pay for it was we go out of our paychecks and save less for a while. Not dipping into savings per se, just spending that money that would otherwise be saved.
    *** It's funny because I'm fat ***
  • we're just paying cash. we pay off our credit cards every month, so need to use those, and we don't get tax refunds, ever. I am just now making a plan to buy the more expensive stuff over the next 4 months so we don't take a big hit all in one month.
  • Buying items slowly (one big item per month), and trying to find sales or coupons to use.

Now that I'm pregnant, we don't go out as much anymore, so there is a little extra in our budget.  We use some of that for baby stuff, some goes into savings.

  • Savings and gifts hopefully!  The Tax return might come in handy  - I hadn't thought about that one yet.  I also have a bonus from work coming as soon as I get a project done.  Hopefully that will cover everythign and we won't have to use credit.

  • Our parents are buying a few of the big ticket items for us, other than that we are paying cash for everything and also have a baby savings account if we need to use it.

  • We saved in advance and we also put aside our stimulus check from last year for this purpose.  Nothing will need to go on credit.  Family is helping us out by buying a couple of the bigger items off our registry.  DH is saving us money by building all of the nursery furniture, including the crib, and also the chair rails for the room.  It's so nice to have a skilled DH!
  • Hard to buy anything since DH won't let me find out the sex, haha.

  • I am so blessed to have a big family and we are all really close. I know I am going to get a lot of help from them at the baby shower and my cousin who just had her baby turn 1 last month has already given me a case of glass bottles and has a bunch of little things she never used.

We will be budgeting ourselves for anything we don't get at the shower. DH's parents have offered to buy us the crib and my parents are getting our travel set which are the 2 biggest things we have on our registry!

  • I have a job with a descent salary and we don't live pay check to pay check so I have plenty to go out and buy what we need.  Smart planning when we purchased our home 2 years ago, and then spent the last year paying down all debt and saving....not buying furniture etc. for our new house.
  • I have no earthly idea.
  • I wish we were just plan rich!  But we're not.  My in-laws are purchasing the crib and dresser, my parents have helped us with the nursery (complete renovation of the room) and purchasing the p-n-p, I'm hoping my grandparents will purchase the travel system, and then we're having a shower.  We're having a shower and I hope to get a lot of the little to medium things from there.  All the remaining stuff and anything I absolutely have to have will be purchased from our tax return.
  • We bought our baby funriture the other day. (we put it on our card) but we have themoney to pay for it. Plus my Parents are buying thebabys crib and mattress.. Other than that we are waiting until we find out what we are having then we will buy the bedding. Then Register for everything else we need. we are by no means rich though.. Haha

  • Wedding money!  We got married last June and still have a good amount in our savings account. Ideally we would have liked to use it towards a down payment for a house but we're in no shape to buy any time soon. We'll use some for baby stuff and expect to receive some gifts from close friends and family. My SIL is giving us her crib, a stroller (or two) and a bunch of stuff. And if we have a boy, we have clothing for years.

  • Less travel/vacations for us and fewer clothes for me = more money for baby stuff.  I think we will just be able to pay for everything out of our regular salaries.

DH and I both get annual bonuses so anything outstanding we might pay for with that money.

  • My parents are buying the crib and dresser for us. They bought us a glider for Christmas. We aren't really into a getting every baby gadget or toy out there, we live a very simple life.?

Our families are very generous, we will buy any necessities that we need after our showers with cash. (don't do credit cards/debt) I've been buying cloth diapers when they go on sale since I was about 12 weeks. We've also bought some clothes but not much.?

  • Any extra $$ we have, we budget for the baby.  We haven't bought much so far as we're paying off a credit card first (yay for debt-free on 2/26/09!), and then we'll be saving for a house, but we can spend SOME of that on baby with what we don't get as gifts.  We're counting on gifts for stuff before we see what's left that we have to buy much of though.
  • It's been a combo of things for us.  We have been saving since we starting TTC.  We are having a few showers (one local, one in DH's home town, and we are each having a work shower).  We don't expect to get everything we need.  For the items we don't get, we will look on craig's list for some things, we will use the BRU completion coupon for the furniture, and we will go to "once up a child" for some things as well.  So, cash for everything.

  • We started saving the second I got the BFP. We didn't want to rely on getting things from people to support our decision to have a baby.

  • ALL OF THE ABOVE!!!
  • I will receive a bonus in March that will pay for a big chunk of our baby items. We're also using tax refunds, plus our Jan-May savings will most likely be marked for only baby stuff. I'm also hoping to get some cash gifts from grandparents.

  • I finished paying back a loan, so then I just pretended I was still paying it off and put that amount aside every month since we got our BFP. We also asked for gift cards towards the crib for Christmas, and our parents have bought us some of the bigger items. We have also just really evaluated what we need and what is an 'extra' but not a necessity....and I got a sewing machine so I am making a lot of stuff too (baby wipes, sleep sacks etc.)....

  • I'm using a dresser and a rocking chair that we already own.  I'm going to make my own bedding and curtains.

my parents are going to buy the stroller.  then I'm hoping that some relatives on MH side will pick up a couple of the big ticket items (maybe crib and car seat?).  We'll wait a while before we start buying though but we'll just probably use savings/credit cards.

  • My sister has given us a TON of stuff, my BF bought our furniture and my wonderful family is throwing me a shower.  After all of this, what we still need we will buy out of what we can save.
  • We'll buy the nursery furniture with money we have stashed away in savings.  Then we'll create a registry and leave it up to the gift-giving gods until after the shower.  From there, we'll take stock of what we still need and decide if we want to buy new or used.

We won't get a tax refund (DH is self-employed), but we're hoping to refinance our house soon and use those monthly savings towards monthly payments on a new, bigger, yet gas-efficient car.

Not rich, but we're savers, and these expenses have been planned for over the past few years.

Oh, and EVERYTHING will go on our Discover and AmEx cards (paid off in full each month), so we can get those wonderful CASH BACK rewards!  Free money adds up!

  • A good part will be courtesy of grandparents to be. I mean, both sides want to help us with the baby shopping (they are excited for the first grandchild). Very thankful they are stepping in like this.
