XP: DS was diagnosed w/reflux today

After a very scary moment at 3 am, I took him into the pediatrician first thing this morning and they diagnosed him with having reflux and prescribed Prevacid.  I'm glad I took him in, but part of me wonders if he really does have reflux.  I guess I'm confused about the symptoms.  He always spits up after eating (he is BF), but it's never projectile spitting up nor does it come out of his nose, etc.  Just this past week, he started arching his back and crying after eating when I try to burp him - never gets fussy while he's eating.  The spit up has been kind of thick/mucousy.  I guess I always thought if he had reflux, he would have more of the projectile spitting, fussiness, etc. before 3 months of age.  He has been congested since birth, which the NP said is common with reflux?  The reason I took him in was because he was choking/gagging on mucous/spit up this morning and it completely terrified me (I think it has scarred me for life).  I'm beyond scared to put him to bed tonight.  I don't know if I should put him back in his crib, if I should fit him into the bassinet (which he is getting too big for and can't really stretch out), if I should put him somewhere else to sleep... I don't know what to do.  Any suggestions?  Every time I think about him choking this morning, I start crying.  I felt so helpless.  I really don't want that to happen to him again and will do anything in my power to prevent it.

Re: XP: DS was diagnosed w/reflux today

  • EEK!  My DD was diagnosed on Thursday with the same thing.  I was up all night with her on Thursday morning and around 5 am she started to choke in addition to her coughing.  I thought that it was a cold or RSV or something so the reflux diagnosis confused me as well.  I thought that reflux would be more spitting up than she does and also more projectile.  She was prescribed Zantac and has taken it twice and I haven't noticed a significant difference.  It is sooooooo scary and soooo sad when she is gagging and choking and looking at me with those frightened eyes.

My ped. recommended that we incline her mattress by putting phone books under the mattress or to put her in a swing or bouncer.  I have slept on the couch for the past 2 nights with her in her papasan next to me.  It has worked miracles!  She is able to breathe so much better by being inclined a little bit.  I'm hoping it will clear up a little and I will be able to move her back into her bassinet in the weeks ahead.

  • DS has bad reflux and never projectile vomited and it never came out of his nose.  At first the symptoms were identical to what you are seeing: spit up after meals, congestion, arching back, upset when burping, eating okay.  It progressed to getting more and more fussy during burping, then when he ate.  He started having HUGE barfs which looked like 2-4 oz.  The back arching and crying/screaming got progressively worse.  He had an upper GI and he does indeed have significant reflux.

Now we have him on prevacid and zantac daily plus carafate and mylanta as needed.  He sleeps on a tucker wedge to elevate him and he eats Enfamil AR, which is thickened formula to help him keep it down.

You should try to elevate your DSs head by putting something under one side of the mattress.  That will help keep stuff down.  No fail, when we lay DS down flat, he spits up at least a little.

See if the prevacid helps.  If not, you may want to request a referral to a GI for a full evaluation to see if it is indeed reflux.  Good Luck!

  • My husband had it when he was an infant too and ended up having to have surgery at 3 months to correct his gastroesophogial sphyncter (sp?) so he couldn't spit up anymore.  I am hoping and praying that this is not the path DD is headed...
