Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Need to start supplementing with formula at 6 mo. -- any advice?

I've been exclusively BF-ing my DD for six months, but my work schedule has changed and I don't think I'll be able to keep pumping enough at work to replace the bottles she's drinking. Unfortunately, I don't know squat about formula --brands, types, etc. -- and would love some advice as I consider supplementing. Is there a certain kind that's more appropriate for introducing at six months? She's already started solids (cereal and veggies at this point), so maybe she won't have as big a problem with a new taste as she might have earlier? And I hope to continue to BF aside from 1-2 bottles a day. Is that realistic? TIA!

Re: Need to start supplementing with formula at 6 mo. -- any advice?

  • I switched to formula at 6 months. I tried a few because I had a ton of samples and found that I loved Good Start the best. Well, he didn't have much gas with it, it doesn't smell like the other formula and my pedi also uses it for her baby so I felt good about it. At first I started just BF in the morning and at night and then just eliminated it and he was on formula full time. He didn't care a bit. Good Luck to you.

  • Same as above, except I use the standard dutch formula. ?Anyway you should be able to to maintain breast feeding morning and night or just continue your regular pumping and supplement when need when you are away from him. ?Honestly my DD had no problem going to formula. ?I still breast feed her in the morning but I will probably stop soon.
  • I BFd for 7.5 months and just recently switched to all formula. However, my supply had already started to dip around 6/6.5mos so I had no choice but to give 1 bottle a day...which turned to 2, and then back to 1, and finally a downward spiral to 2 again, 3, and finally 4.

So I guess what I'm saying is I did it slowly and over 6wks. Even if I didnt' plan it that way. She takes GoodStart (green can) and I really like it best because most importnatly, DD tolerates it and secondly because it shakes up really well. Enfamil with froth up for days :)

  • Due to work events we had to start supplement at 6mos. too. I started her on Enfamil with Lipil because I had coupons and free samples! She had no problem switching between bm and formula. I looked into switching her to Enfamil Next Step now that she is 9mos but didn't b/c the next step has corn syrup in it. We did compare labels with Wegman's (grocery store) brand and Enfamil and it is the same ingredients/nutritional breakdown so we have switched her to the generic.
  • We are in the same boat. And, surprisingly, it's been a total breeze. And she STTN now (I am convinced because of the formula), so there's been an added bonus! Anyhow, her bottles are now 3 oz. ebm, and 3 oz. formula, combined. On the occasions when we've had to give her straight formula, she killed the bottle, no big deal! I still nurse for her 1st feeding, and am slowly decreasing my pumping. I think she'll be on 100% formula by 7.5 months.?
