  With the first babe, we opted not to have the NT scan. ?Now that we've lost one due to chromosome problems, we have been strongly encouraged to...and we will.

  Ask for it if you want it.?

  I think it depends on the Dr. It should be offered to everyone, but not everyone will choose to get it. I was offered the testing which is bloodwork and an u/s.  However, my friend who is pg wasn't not offered it. If it is something that you would like to have done, I would call you Dr. office and ask them about it. 12 weeks isn't to late (im having mine done at 12w6d), but they might have to set you up with the u/s tech or send you out if they dont know the capabilities in the office.   My dr told me that if we wanted to do it, it had to be done before or right at 12 weeks, and we've decided we want to do it.  If you think you want to do it, I'd call your doctor and let her know so that she can book it for you if she does them at the same time as my dr.

  I am going to do a little more research on it. I will call the dr on Monday though and mention it. Honestly, she may have already talked about it- but she said so many things at that first appt. My memory is like swiss cheese these days.?

  They have to have access to a technician or doctor that is trained in the measurement.  Not everyone has access to this, it depends where you live.  It has to be done between 11-13 weeks.  So if you want it, I would call and ask before your next appointment.  It is completely optional though - everyone has a risk of having a baby with down's or trisomy 18, the test just gives you a better idea of what your risk is compared to the risk just based on age alone.  If it is elevated [usually higher than 1:200 ish] then most docs recommend an amniocentesis to find out if there is a problem or not.

  we were told it was optional b/c of our age and we didnt have a family history of Down Syndrome or anything but we opted to do it anyway. I'm always worried about everything, so I rather get all the tests I can Also not all insurance plans will cover it. They told us it would be about $500 if we werent covered.
