Q about the name Noel

Dh and I love the name Noel for a baby girl, however I am worried that people will think Noel is a weird name for a baby born in the spring. Just wondering your opinion on a spring baby named Noel.

  • Winter didn't even cross my mind when I saw the name.

  • I love that name.  I just told DH that I like it, he wasn't crazy about it though.  I like it spelled Noelle.
  • I like the name, but when I see it spelled "Noel," I think of the boy name pronounced like the word "knoll." Maybe it's just me, but for a girl I would spell it, "Noelle" :)

  • Darling name- no matter what time of year you use it!  When I see it spelled that way I think of boy (NOE-L), but if spelled Noelle I think it looks more girly.
  • Thanks ladies. I also appreciate the spelling advice. I had the same thoughts but was not sure of any other ways to spell the name.

Ditto.  Remember the show, 'Wings'?  I'm pretty sure the mechanic was named Noel and that's what I thought when I first read it.  Though the first Noel is spelled that way...interesting...

Ditto (I actually met a male Noel yesterday pronounced like "knoll.")

Another female option would be Noel with an umlaut over the e (two dots)

  • Ditto on Noel being a one syllable name pronounced like 'knoll'.  It is a boy's name.

If you want the two syllable pronounciation, go with Noelle.  You could do the umlots as a pp suggested but your daughter would spend her life explaining that it is pronounced "no-elle" not "knoll".

  • I like it spelled Noelle. IMO it looks more feminine and less Christmas-y.

  • Who care what people think?

If my baby is a girl,(which I'm pretty sure it is) her name will be Basil Isabella. Yes. Basil. Like the spice you cook with. My husband and I have gotton a lot of guff about it, and we just decided we don't care what people think. This would be a good philosophy for you. :)

If you like Noel, name her that!

     Ditto.

And I actually think that a Christmas baby named Noelle is almost corny but any other time it's sweet! :)

  • When I see Noel I think of No-uhl as in the boy's name....not No-elle which is what I think your going for based on your winter comment.

If you're going for Noelle, I don't consider it a winter name.  I work with a Noelle and when I first heard it I didn't associate it with Christmas.

I wouldn't go with the Noel spelling.  I think people will always spell and pronounce it incorrectly.

  • i would def. not spell it that way- that to me reads as a boy name (proun: Nole) like from the show Felicity

Noelle is the traditional way to spel the girl name (that means Christmas).  It is a beautiful name, and I don't think it is weird to name a girl due not at xmas that- she may get asked a couple times in her life if she was born around xmas- but that is no big deal

  • Ditto everyone else about the spelling for boy v. girl & I definitely don't think it is a wintery name or anything like it. Its pretty!

PS Lowell was the guy on Wings. I love that show ;)

  • It doesn't seem weird for a baby born in the spring, but I was thinking it was the boy version of Noel (like Noel Gallagher - pronounced like the word "knoll" - I like it a lot for a boy).  For a girl, I would probably spell it Noelle.

  • I think of Noel as a girl's name that can be used any time of the year.
  • I agree with everyone else that it's less Christmas-y and more clearly feminine when spelled Noelle. ?If you are still stuck on it being too Christmas-y, maybe you'd like Simone or Eden?
  • my neice Noelle's birthday is in mid-February
  • I love the name Noel.  In fact, my niece's name is Noelle.  I also really like the name Noela.  It sounds very gentle.

  • I always think of Noel as being a boys name, and Noelle being for a girl.
  • I really like that name and I don't think it matters that she will be born in the spring.  I would spell it Noelle, though, since Noel can be a boy's name.

  • My MN is Noel, I like the spelling Noelle mcuh better though.
  • i like it better as a boy's name. but it is actually very uncommon for girls now so that might be cute.
