How much does prenatal care & delivery cost?

I'm a first time-er. So I'm looking around for an OB, right, and one facility I was checking out suggested that typical care from them runs around $3500 (prenatal visits, tests, deliver, all in that number).

I know insurance will/may cover some/all of that, but I got to thinking:

How much should I expect the bill to be?

How much does it vary depending on your doc choice (midwife, birthing center, walk in, etc)?

  • It's between 6500-8500 here...more for C-section.  We will have to pay 10% of the whole bill.  We set aside 1600 for it and feel like that should cover it.

  • that question is pretty much impossible to answer. Call your insurance and find out what they cover and what your deductible is/copay etc... that is the only way you are going to get an estimate.

  • HOLY COW.

  • I don't have any clue what they *charge* normally but my prenatal appointments are free and my delivery will be $400. Thank goodness for my Kaiser insurance!

  • our ob's fee is $2500 for regular vaginal delivery. extra costs are u/s, anything that happens out of the ordinary, etc. extra for c-section. anesth. not included, hospital not included.
  • With my insurance, prenatal and postnatal care are covered 100%.  For delivery, we can expect to pay my $500 deductible.  Also...once the baby is born, we pay his $500 deductible.  All other hospital charges are covered 100%.  (After the deductibles of course)

  • We are going to an Ob/gyn office inside the hospital that is also staffed with midwives.  They gave us a sheet that said a regular delivery w/ all normal pre-natal care is $2500, a c/s delivery is $3500.  Normal PN care is monthly check-ups, bloodwork, and 1 u/s.  NT scan, 3-D u/s, etc, are optional and extra.  Our insurance should cover all but $100.

  • Around $3k for vaginal delivery here.

Lucky me got a c/s though and when we saw that it was almost $15k we thanked our lucky stars for having ins.

  • Lucky for us, my unsurance paid for everything, all my visits (minus a 20$ co-pay) and my delivery, was $29,000.00, but i was in the hospital for over a week and had an emergency c-section along with a host of other issues. From what I hear, a "normal" delivery, including the prenatal visits is between 4-6k.
  • We got the bill in the mail this week. Just for the OBGYN it is going to run $3500. Our insurance will pay 90% of the cost so we will be out a whapping $607 for the OBGYN.

Don't forget though you should always calculate the cost of the hospital stay and your peditrician's expense to come to the hospital.

My pediatrician is $100 deposit for her to visit the hospital to check the baby.

    Good luck.

  • My insurance covers everything as well....I couldn't imagine having to come up with that much cash....love, love my husbands union insurance!!
  • Mine will be about 6K after insurance.
  • My out of pocket max for the year is $4200.  This is what we will end up paying I'm sure.  I have already received a breakdown for prenatal visits, and "normal" delivery (doesn't include ultrasounds, testing, bw etc) and this alone was $1800.

  • Mines completely covered unless I want a private room and the facility I am delivering at only has private rooms, so even that is covered.

I may spring for the TV to be turned on.

  • My physicians fee for a normal vag delivery is $3233 and $3827 for a C/S.  That includes up to 13 routine prenatal visits, delivery, and routine post partal visits.  Anything else is extra- U/S, lab work, injections, and NST.  Separate bills for hospital, anesthesia, and pediatrician.  Circ is $376 if you choose to do so.  The physicans fee has to be paid in full two months before teh expected date of delivery.  My insurance covers at 80% so I will need to pay $647 by July.  My deductable is $550 and my max out of pocket is $3000.
  • Thanks all: super helpful! Gives me an idea of what questions to ask while I'm "shopping around" before I pick.

  • Call you insurance company or get on their website.  All we have to pay is a $30 copay and thats it.

Also make sure that your insurance covers any dr you decide on before you make an appointment.  If we saw someone out of group we would have had to pay a lot more.  We still had a ton of options and you don't want to end up with bills you could have been avoided.

  • To deliver c/s it was about 28K. ?I believe the OB wanted a couple hundred plus 2 co-pays plus co-pays for each of my Non Stress Tests. ?We have insurance so we paid a little over 3K.
  • I cannot even imagine having to fork over thousands of dollars just to carry and birth a child.  All my family doctor and OB visits, u/s, labwork, delivery (either vag or c-section), hospital stay are all covered under my province's health care plan. I paid $5 for copies of my u/s pics, that's it.  I know kids cost once they're here, but it makes me sad that it's such a financial struggle for many up front. It's hard to wrap my head around something so different. It seems very unfair.

    Sad

  • I got numbers from two different places.  One told me it was going to be $2515 (before insurance) for pre and post natal appts and delivery, but didn't include ultra sounds, lab work, etc.  The other told me it was going to be around $3000 for pre and post natal, and this one didn't include the ultra sounds or lab work either, but also didn't include the delivery.  Even though this one was more expensive and didn't include the delivery, I ended up going with this office because they had privileges at the hospital I wanted and the other didn't.  Plus, I figure I might might be maxing my insurance out in the end (meeting the out of pocket maximum), so I figured it probably didn't make that much difference.
