2nd Trimester

just sharing, so don't bite my head off for the advice!

My doctor (who is very reputable in Santa Monica / delivered a high profile celeb baby -which really, means nothing, but thought i'd include it anyway) told me that he recommends no back sleeping after 28 weeks!  which is awesome news to me, b/c A. i'm 22 weeks; B.  I just couldn't tolerate sleeping on my sides another night! (I read somewhere that the no back sleep rule kicked in at 20 weeks)

(I still keep my back sleeping to a few hours a night - just in case!)

anyway, I thought I'd share the recommendation to everyone, just in case the lack of sleep was driving you insane, like it was me!

  • That's not the first time I've heard that.  I was planning on asking my doctor about it next time I am there because I didn't know it it was another OWT or actually something I should try to avoid.

  • I lay on my back when watching tv in bed, however, baby seems to move more when I am on my back making that more difficult to get some sleep.
  • I don't get it...He recommends you don't, but you do a few hours every night?  That doesn't make sense...Hmm

I've heard no back sleeping after 28 weeks before...it puts pressure on a bad spot...

  • I read in one of my books that it isn't forbidden, it's just less comfortable the bigger you get (i.e. like sleeping with a bowling ball on your stomach).  It can hinder blood flow, which leads to more swelling, but it isn't anything too detrimental.

I'm confused too... I think she meant he said that you can sleep on your back after 28 weeks. I've heard that it restricts blood flow but mostly it's just uncomfortable. Think about it logically... the position you sleep in can't actually HARM your baby. That's just kinda ridiculous. Lack of sleep can have serious effects on you and the baby though.

Then why did you include it?

I agree about the "ridiculous" thing...actually I'm still sleeping somewhat on my stomach...I can't get comfortable any other way...

  • i just asked my doc about the back sleeping thing the other day. he said you shouldn't later on in pg because as your uterus gets larger it can put pressure on your two big nerves which can restrict bloodflow to baby, and also to your brain- making you feel icky/nauseous. however, he also said, that your body would tell you and kind of wake you up if this was happening. much like sleeping on your belly- your body will tell you when it's time not too
  • I knew I was still a little early but I asked my doctor when I should avoid my back or stomach and he said he wouldn't give me a specific week. He said my body would let me know by it either being too uncomfortable or harder to breath. He said he never worries about telling patients because they'll know on their own. I was sooo excited!! : D

    " I'm NOT 28 weeks yet.  I'm 22 weeks - so I still have 6 weeks free of restriction. "
