Regarding pumps

Hi all, I have the Ameda Purely Yours pump, I've been using it for several months...this is the 3rd one ( the Co has replaced them ) b/c the other 2 broke.  I dont like the pump.  It takes me 35 min, at least and I have to constantly do compressions to empty my breasts.  Forget hands free!  My question is this.....do those of you who use the Medela pumps have to do compressions?  Does it take you this long to pump?  I wonder if it is just the way my body is and how it is for me to pump or if I would have had greater success with a different pump.  My son is 7 1/2 months, so dont know that I should buy a new pump at this point, but considering it.  Thank you.

Re: Regarding pumps

  • I have Purely Yours and haven't had a problem with it at all.  I'm sorry you are having trouble.  I'd say it is either your body or simply bad luck.

  • Hi!  I also have the Ameda and had to have the company replace it once as it just stopped working.  Although I do not pump at work anymore (just nurse DD at night) I did have some problems with the suctions at times and it taking longer.  I invested in a Avent manual pump when I bought my electric in case it broke (which it did).  I absolutely LOVE my manual.  It works faster and I usually get .5-1 more oz than the electric.  I use it now when I am engored for whatever reason.  You may want to look into just getting a manual for the time being and see how that works for you instead of spending another 200-300 on a new pump.

  • I still do compressions with my Medela PISA.  I think compressions are good idea no matter what pump.  But it doesn't take me 35 mins.

It could just be your body...or it could be the pump, or just your body's reaction to that pump.

What about renting a hospital grade pump for a month and seeing if there's any improvement?  I'm not sure I would spend the money on a Medela at this point unless you are sure your pump is the problem.  If you rented one then you'd be out less money.

  • I do compressions with the Medela PISA, but the average pumping session is about 10 minutes, 15 max. I think I'd probably get fired if I had to pump for 35 minutes at a time!
