Babies on the Brain

Poll: Would you?

The ILs have mentioned taking another family vacation this year.  Last year they took us all to St. Maarten.  This summer they are hoping to take us to Hawaii.  JB would probably only be 2-3 months old.  We would obviously take him with us if we went.

Would you go on a summer vacation with a baby that young?  I am kind of nervous about traveling that far away from home with a newborn.

Re: Poll: Would you?

  • I would do it. I'm not the type to stay home though. Babies are mobile and especially having your family there would be nice. I think it depends on your baby though and how comfortable you are with taking him places.

  • I would. My sis took my niece to Mexico when she was 2.5 months old.

  • Also, I agree with Princess. It depends on your comfort level, if you are gonna be freaking out the entire time it won't be fun for anyone.

(not to say you specifically would freak out, but if you aren't going to enjoy it then maybe it's not a good idea)

  • At this point I would say that I would go, but then again, I haven't had a baby before.  DH and I love to travel, so any excuse we get we are game for.  Plus you would have your family with you to help out.  I have heard from a lot of people you should try and travel with the babies while they are young and "so portable" as they like to call it...and thus less mobile themselves.  I am not sure that I would travel to another country with a 2-3 mo old, but since it's Hawaii,  you don't have that problem.

  • Yep,  I traveled with my firstborn internationally when he was 6 weeks old. He has been traveling since he  was super little. The only thing I worried about was all the germs on the airplane.  Luckily he never got sick.

  • I would go. Like pp said you would have the family there to help. You and DH may want to take advantage of some alone time. Plus your in Hawaii. They have hospitals if you need it and of course stores that sell whatever baby needs!

  • I would, but, I would definitely prefer to stay in country, and I would prefer a low key vacay.  No touring Italy/Europe/Central America.
Your ILs are awesome!  Mine are taking us somewhere this summer, too, because it is FIL's 60th.  It is nice, but nothing is easy with them.  They are actually thinking St. Maarten, too.
Hopefully your ILs are helpful too.  I think that vacationing with a young baby is probably exhausting to some extent.  Unless you are not flying too far and stay in place.  All the stuff you would need to pack!  It would be great, though, if they gave you and DH a few hours to yourself.
    Have fun!

  • Go for it and have a blast. Think 10 years from now, you can look at pictures with dc and recap memories!

  • My parents traveled a lot with me when I was little. I adore looking at the pictures and *pretending* like I remember. I would probably do it, but you shouldn't if you aren't comfortable.
  • I definitely would...it will be a great chance for you to relax, you'll have so many people around to help out and give you a break!

  • I would, but I would also ask my pedi if he could give me a  reference in case something were to happen. I would also make sure to over plan as far as packing for baby and everything.
  • I would do it.   I can't handle staying home, I am the type of person that is always going somewhere.

FYI - We stayed at Ville Oceane or Ocean Villa. It was AMAZING!  From what the ILs said, it wasn't super expensive either.

  • Totally.  As long as there were no health issues, absolutely!  And you could always talk to the doctor if that would help you feel better about it.
  • Thanks ladies!  Even though I am nervous about traveling with him, I think we will still go if the offer is on the table.  It will be nice having family there to help us.

  • I'd go. We're planning on taking this kid to Southern California in October (baby will be around 3 months if s/he comes on time) to visit family and play.
  • You'll have a great time - and think about how cute he'll be in a sun hat under an umbrella! That's the only thing that will be a challenge, no sun or sunscreen until 6 mos, so you will have to keep him in the shade, but I think they are pretty good about providing lots of it in tropical areas.
