Re: Mercury found in high fructose corn syrup

  • Have you seen the commercials? I don't care what the commercial says, high fructose corn syrup is not natural and totally disgusting to me. Specially the one where they are eating the popsicles - those things have so much sugar!

  • I haven't read this article or study in its entirety yet, but I did get word from a registered dietitian who does PR (I think) for the Corn Refiner's Association. She stated that they have used mercury-free caustic soda and hydrochloric acid, two of the reagents mentioned in the study, for several years now. And another article I read from the National Institutes of Health about this study did state that mercury-free reagents exist. It's just a matter of food companies choosing to use them.  It'll be interesting to see this story pan out.
  • I know.  Those commercials are disgusting.  I actually bought into it for the last 2 months and started eating things with hfcs.  Good that DS is exposed to it only for a couple of months.  When I'm done with my current cereal and bread, I'm switching back to all natural stuff again.

The article says that about half of the products tested has mercury.  Half don't.  And the group that did the study want to have some law passed so that there won't be any more mercury in it.
