NBR: Why do women=sex?

So with all the craziness with the stupid PETA ad that was banned from the super bowl, I got thinking about something again....

I'm not all uptight or anything, but why are women in our society ALWAYS equated with sex???  Why can't I as a woman see just as much sexual propaganda/advertising/whatever with men in it?  Why are there no risque ads for a female audience?  Am I the only one who thinks our society is so one-sided and not fair?  Not that I'm begging to see naked guys all over, but just to make a point.

I swear, in a day's time doing daily routine stuff, I probably see 10 nearly naked women in provacative or "beautiful" poses, trying to sell something to make women want to be more beautiful to get men's attention, or to try and get men's attention with sexy/suggestive advertising.  What must it be like to be a guy and see this day in day out, all day long?  I never ever see the media using men to sell things

I don't mean to start a huge debate, just wanna see what you ladies think?

  • I dont know if I agree 100%. Sure, there is a lot more advertising using women as sex symbols and trying to get women to be sexier, but they have those ads for men, too. . .

  • It's because we have breasts. Society is run by predominately males. Men are much easier to arouse, therefore, more frequently targetted, therefore, women become sex objects. These are all my theories of course.
  • I agree partially with PP but I also think men operate more visually.  Women are more mental.  I think men get off more on looking at Playboy where (in my mind!!!) a woman we'll get off more on a sexy trash novel.

  • didn't you know?? ?IT'S A MAN'S WORLD!!!!!!

they still get paid more for the same jobs because they have this magical instrument called a ***.

if you will notice, many of the commercials on tv that are not propogating female sexuality to arouse the audiences (male OR female for any of you same sex mamas) use females to sell vaccuums/cleaning agents/fast recipes etc... ?The only time they will use a man is when they are saying "IT'S SO EASY EVEN YOUR STUPID HUSBAND CAN USE IT!!!!" which is not very nice either as I'm sure many of us have husbands that do the housework better than ourselves.

I mean the very essence of marriage is a man's idea. ?They have romanticized the idea that going from your father's last name to your husband's last name is such a tender thing; but if you really think about that, this male to male surname for women is a completely sexist practice! ?THe message of this practice is that we are men's properties. ?Who are the women in our history? ?We are all nameless, we have all been past down from father to husband and father to husband again and again. ?It took me a while to be able to deal with this and i still have issues with it. ?It frustrates me that mothers who go through so much to have these children and bring them up are nameless. ?All the credit goes to the father and the father's father and so on.

?I've kept my last name. ?I have permitted my son (come May) to take my husband's last name as I do truly love his grandfather. ?I haven't decided on future children or girls. ?It's a tough subject.?

  • imageSweet Mary:
    Sex sells.

and this is one of the points of my post...we equate women with sex, and sex sells, so women are the ones used...why can't it be a bit more the other way around??

  • You are right. We are objectified and as long as it sells - it will be used...

Which is why one of my fav comercial - which I haven't seen in a while - is the one where it shoes this really hot guy, shirtless, HAWT jeans undone  ironing a dress (could be  a woman or a young girls, so you get to aplpy your own spin dep if you have kids or not), then it goes to the product of the commercial - then it flashes to the guy cleaning the toilet and then it says something like ( I can't remember it exactly - I haven't seen it since I got my baby brains)... " we know what women really want.." LOL. I will try to find it and will post the link...

edit** Oh and while he is ironing he is making reservations for their 6 months anniversary... 6 months!

  • Agreed! ?I honestly get tired of seeing it soemtimes. ?I wish there half the commecials with hot men ?: ) ?Men are more visually stimulated though which is really sad. ?There is a website that I found that someone sent my husband called chikipedia.com (sp?) ?lame! ?I guess I don't get the whole sitting around on the computer looking at random girls you will never touch when you have a wife with DD's right now ?: ) ?I am not a feminist at all but I believe that it's todays TB and mags that make young girls feel the way they do about themselves, you have a certain image you feel you have to keep up. ?Just like Jessica Simpson, she is being bashed b/c she "packed on" a few extra lbs, so what! ?She is still gorgeous and even more sexy. ?How is that suppose to make someone feel? ?Oh god, if I eat this piece of pizza it may go to my a**, that's how it feels. ?I know, I have been there. ?I have battled anorexia for 10+ years and it is a battle every single day. ?Especially now that I am pregnant, of course I have gained 20 lbs already but I try not to think about it. ?Ok, so I went on a little tangent, I am done. ?And to think I was going to leave just a small comment ?: )
  • I agree - I am not a huge J Simpson fan, but it made me so mad that they were making fun of her. Heaven forbid she put on 10 pounds and be a normal weight. Same thing when they put those pics of Jennifer Love Hewitt up and made fun of her  and then showed her eating at a fast food place. My h*ll, leave the ladies alone and if they are happy and want a Big Mac, shut the f up!
  • I do agree with pp. Men like to look at women provocatively, and it makes for successful advertising. But have to point out that it's not entirely one-sided:
