HELP! I got a biter!!

Help! ?My 7 month old, who has 7 pearly whites, has just started biting while nursing. ?It has happened a couple of times since his first tooth came several months ago, and when it did, I immediately pulled him off and tapped his mouth, along with a grumpy 'NO! NO! NO!'. ?This seemed to discourage him, as it rarely happened. ?

Until now. ?I have been bitten 3 times just today. ?:(

?I would love to continue breast feeding,?but I can't take much more of his new 'game'. ?

I would love to hear any suggestions or experiences you may have had!!

Thanks!?

Re: HELP! I got a biter!!

  • My little one just started this and her 2 top teeth haven't even completely come out yet.

You're doing exactly what you're supposed to do. Just be consistent about it and eventually he'll stop, or you'll just have to pump or give it up.  I'm already preparing myself for that possibility even though I don't want to either. I'd really miss it and I think my dd would too.  It might just take a consistent cause and effect lesson from you before he finally gets it.

  • Thanks for the reassurance!?

  • When he bites you, do what you are doing, except also put him on the floor immediately.  If he cries, pick him up and nurse him for comfort.  If he doesn't cry, but acts hungry, try again.  If he bites you again, or doesn't cry and doesn't seem hungry, end the nursing session and assume he's not that hungry.  He'll get he message that biting = no food.  It will work out!

  • all the PPs have good advice.  i also keep a teether or something else for him to bite on besides me!  if after a couple more tries he doesn't focus on feeding, i stop and have him play or do something else.
  • My DD is 10 months and she has been biting for awhile. It hurts like hell sometimes especially when she holds on and tugs with her teeth!! I get her off and tell her no. She sometimes cries but I try and say it in a nice way. I asked this question on the nest before and I was recommended to go onto Kelly mom.com. There was a section for biting if you type it in. I am also thinking about not nursing as much. She really does not seem to stay on very long and I thought that this may be a sign that she is ready. GL!
