NBR: Squash (Anybody know when it's ripe?)

Good morning! My job is having a Thanksgiving lunch tomorrow and I'm supposed to bring squash. We don't even celebrate thanksgiving here. I've never cooked squash in my life. The over zealous organizer told me to just bring it in and we'll put it in the slow cooker. That's all well and good but how do I know when it's ready to be cooked? I bought it today. Why didn't she ask me to bring pumpkin instead? I should have told her that I don't want to bring squash from the beginning. Can somebody help me out please? I'll be most grateful and who knows maybe I'll be good today;-)

  • I know that I'll have to hand in my cool card after this one.

  • as long as its not a really really pale yellow you should be good. A bright to deep yellow is about where it should be. and when you cut into it it should be moist... if its super dry that means you are too early or too late.

How do you plan on cooking it? we always slice ours kind of thick and then put it in a pan with some bacon, butter, salt and pepper. not "healthy" but it tastes damn good. :)

  • Thank you, HeyTurtle! The squash is green. If I was cooking it at home I'd probably do it exactly how you suggested but since it's at work all we have is a slow cooker. I guess I'll cut it up, season it and throw it in there.
  • If its green its probably Zucchini, they taste pretty much the same to me :)  And you can cook them the same as well.
