2nd Trimester

Tailbone pain!

The past three days (starting one day when I sat on the ground at work for two hours looking at documents) I've had tailbone pain.  From everything I'm reading about this, I'm not far enough along for this kind of pregnancy induced tailbone pain.  Anyone else experience pain this early in pregnancy?  Any solutions?  TIA

Re: Tailbone pain!

  • Are you sure its not sciatic nerve pain?  Mine usually start from my tailbone (when I sit) and shoots down my leg.

  • I have had tons of pain in my tailbone area too.....it feels like my ass is spreading from the top out. I think that's normal though with the curent situation.
  • I second the pp, are you sure it's not sciatic pain?  I really thought that I had tailbone pain, when all the while, it wasn't my tailbone that was actually hurting, it was instead an actual pain in the ass.  Wink  My butt would get this sharp pain and it would run all the way down my leg if I walked, stood, or layed the wrong way.

  • I'm not totally sure it isn't sciatic pain because I have no idea what that feels like, but this is really localized.  It doesn't spread down my leg at all.

It feels like a little circle of pain right at the bottom of my tailbone, literally right at the start of the crack area.

I'm not even 14 weeks.  I don't think this is a good sign of what's to come.Stick out tongue

  • I've had similar pain that spreads a little bit down into the butt area but not the legs.   Try having DH or sig other massage that area - that has helped for me.
  • I am right with you!  I've had it in the past too, but nothing like I've felt lately.  Pre-pregnancy I would feel it maybe a couple of times a year.  I always chalked it up to an old skiing/snowboarding injury (during which there were many falls on my behind!!!!).  But lately it happens almost daily (sometimes multiple times throughout the day) & the pain is to the point where I can't even put pressure to sit down--& I am only 13 weeks too so it isn't due to extra weight (I've actually lost a couple of pounds since my BFP).  I agree with you that it isn't sciatic--it is very localized and there is no pain down my leg.  I am not looking forward to the next few months!!!!!  I teach in a Montessori school with young children so I spend most of my day sitting on the floor.  I'm thinking I may need to invest in one of those blow-up donuts to sit on at some point soon.  I'd love to hear other suggestions too though if anyone has any!!!!
  • ugh! I'm so there with you! It hurts to sit, it hurts to walk. DH massaged it this morning and that felt good while he was doing it but now that I'm at work, I'm so sore again. I guess try walking and stretching.
  • I feel your pain!  Mine started about 4 days ago and it is exactly as you describe...just a pain right at the base of my tailbone.  Mine only starts hurting when I stand or walk for long periods of time.  Usually if I sit down for awhile it will relieve it until I start standing again!

DH is in Chiropractic school and his diagnosis is that my Sacrum (sp?) is out of alignment.  I am going to address it at my next appointment.  I will let you know if getting it adjusted helps!
