6 month old hates solids - advice?

We've been trying for three weeks now to feed our six-month-old solids.  We've tried rice cereal, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, banana, and carrots.  He clamps his jaws shut the second he sees the spoon.  He will also turn his head and try to bat the spoon away.  Usually we can only persuade him to take one or two bites before the fussing starts.

Any suggestions?  Thanks.

  • Give him a break and try again later. He's showing very blatant signs that he does not want it, so I would say give him a break and try again later. If he still does it, try again later.  Continuing when he's clearly refusing isn't going to help at all.

  • the spoon can be a scary thing.

we started by finger feeding him and it worked well

    good luck :)

  • We're still going through the exact same thing. We took a 2 week break and started trying again on Saturday (her 7 mo. bday), but there was no difference. I don't know if I should take another break or what... now she's teething, so I'm sure her crankiness doesn't help matters.?
  • i would definitely say to give him a break and let him try again in a week or so. if he's not ready don't push him to be, it just may take him awhile to want to try solids. pps suggestion of trying off a finger may work better. he'll get it eventually though, so no worries :)
  • try the finger as spoon method after a little break. also, we've done apples, bananas, oatmeal and squash. the squash is the only one she actually eats. our pedi told us to try giving more veggies and we might be surprised by how well she likes them.
  • Ditto pp re: finger feeding.  Also, we had this same problem and solved it by letting DD hold the spoon herself for a while.  Nothing got in her mouth that way, but we would finger feed or use a different spoon to get the food in her while she was distracted playing with her "own" spoon.  Having control got her liking the spoon after a while.

  • like pps said, he just might not be ready. do you eat with him? we now put dd at the table with us during all of our meals and if it's not time for her to eat, we give her her plastic spoon and empty bowl to play with.

  • let him sit in the highchair and just play with the spoon.

sometimes leaving him have the spoon while you feed him with another helps distract. but if he isn't ready- he isn't ready and give him a break.
