So disappointed and angry!

So i have been on bedrest since the beginning of October for some placental bleeding and have been counting down the days to our BIG us.

 So the day finally came and I was so excited!!!

 The lady does her thing, shows us the hands, feet, heart, brain, etc... All is great. Baby is moving a lot but still, she gets all her measurements.

 Then, she says: Ok, get dressed now.

I look at my DH in disbelief that she did not even ASK us if we wanted to know the sex. So I ask her: Could we know if it's a boy or a girl? And her answer: No I did NOT look. And turns around and goes.

 I started crying, although feeling relieved that our baby is healthy...

 So then, she comes back with the report and the pictures and tells me that since I am fat, she couldn't see well and that we'ld find out when I deliver. That it's not possible to schedule another US...

 I was so upset. I wanna go complain, but DH and I work at that hospital so I am just going to shush...

 I called my OB's office and I am getting another US on monday morning. I will be paying 150$ out of pocket though...

 Sorry, this is so long, I needed to vent.

At least our child is healthy!

Oh I'm sorry, that sucks! I would be PISSED and rasing hell, who cares that you work there also. She can't treat people like that! Did she say "cause you're fat" in those words?? I would be on the phone with her supervisor ASAP, and getting another FREE u/s.

Awww. I am so sorry that you had to go through something like that and even more sorry that you have to pay out of pocket for something that should have been taken care of by the tech -- that is her job!!

Didn't you ask?  The whole purpose of the 20wk u/s is for measurement, etc...basically for medical purposes. It's just an added perk that you can also find out the sex.

Our u/s tech once finished his measuring, asked us if we had any questions. Of course I piped up and asked him to find out the sex.

Sorry you didn't get to find out the sex, but the added bonus is that baby is healthy! Congrats!

I'm not buying that you are too fat for her to see the sex organs. ?If she could see everything else no problem then she should have been able to find the goods too. ?She sounds like a twat!

The same thing happened to me when I was pregnant with DD. I waited for the tech to get all her measurements done before I asked. All of a sudden she shut the machine off and I asked her if we would be able to tell what we were having. She said I'm sorry we only do that when people ask right up front. How was I suppose to know? It was my first ultrasound. I felt like she should have asked if I wanted to know or not. I mean alot of people want to find that sort of thing out at the 20 wk u/s. I know how you feel. Needless to say, we were surprised at the delivery. Good luck!!

before you go through with the ultra sound at the dr's office, check and see if there is a place in your town that will do the 3d u/s. there's one here and its only $75 base. cool thing is you get more photos and more time looking at the baby....less time dealing with the snotty u/s tech that you had before.

The tech that did ours asked us right from the beginning if we wanted to know.

Oh hellllllllllllllllllllll noooooooooooooooo!!!  I'll beat her up for you.  ;o)  Doesn't she know not to mess with us pregnant women!  The "extra fat" comment alone was way out of line.  Plus- everyone of US knows how much we're looking forward to that u/s at 20 weeks to find out what we're having.  You can't tell me that with all the pregnant women she deals with she didn't realize it would be important to you.  What a meanie.  So sorry.

That REALLY sucks!  I'm sorry she was such a B!tch.  Ditto the suggestion about the 3-d ultrasound... if you're going to pay that much out of pocket anyway, it would be cool if you could get one of the special ones.

That's just ridiculous!!!  I'm so sorry for you.  Do you have a 3D/4D ultrasound place in your area you could go to instead?  The reason I ask is because if you have to pay $150.00 anyway, you might want to see if you could do a 3D/4D.  There is a place in my area and it costs $100.00 for the 3D/4D session.  I know prices vary by location, but if you could get a 3D/4D for the same price, I would opt for that.  Just a thought.

While I know that it's not really the reason for the 20wk ultrasound, for her to tell you that you have too much "fat on your tummy" to see is ridiculous. Wasn't she able to see the rest of the kid? Unacceptable.

I am not sure how big you are but I am 5'5 and about 300pds. If the tech told me that I might have decked him. Mine did get a bit snooty that it was for medical reasons and I told him yes I know but it would be nice to know since my mom was knitting special things. She has a bad heart and werent even sure if she would be alive for dd birth.

I would soo call her sup and complain.

That is ridiculous. I worked in hospital HR for 4 years and this is plain unacceptable. Do not let this go. You are not the only person she will treat like that and it is NOT okay. If you don't want to complain to her supervisor go to HR and tell them. You could send an email or a letter too.

Being overweight has nothing to do with her ability to determine the sex if she was able to see everything else.

Wow... what a b!tch!  I am overweight and they had no problems seeing the gender.  My doctor also came in after the tech did all the measurements and confirmed the sex and took some pictures for us.  She did this for all 3 ultrasounds we have had.  I would definitely make a complaint to your doctor.

I agree, that is completely rude. I would call and report her. I'd probably do it in a passive aggressive way - I wanted to check with you about this. The US tech said that because I'm fat that it was useless to check for the sex. My feelings were really hurt by this and the way she treated me, and I also wanted to see if there is a concern about not being able to see the baby properly and also see if there is any way I could have another ultrasound if we might be able to determine the sex."

That is the most absurd response i have ever heard! that lady has a lot of nerve i also work for the hospital where i get my ultrasounds and if i were you i would be on the phone with the manager complaining right away! i am so sorry someone could be so aweful i hope everything works out at your next us!

Absolutely! And a letter who be a really good way to go if you are worried about reprisal since you work there too.  You don't have to put your name on it.  But you really shouldn't let it go.

There is just no freaking way that she was able to see the number of arteries inthe umbilical cord and the chambers of the heart and couldn't see if there was a penis or labia. No. Way. I think she was the one being passive aggressive. Was she heavy? I bet she was just trying to make you feel bad for some sick reason.

Oh hell no! I would be so mad, upset, and hurt. How can someone say you are too fat to see the sex of the baby but then again she could see all of the measurements? Is she crazy? I would have said something right then and there and I would also call and complain. There is no excuse for her being that rude. I am sorry you had to deal with someone like that. Fat or skinny, they shouldnt act that way. Maybe she is jealous or something. Who knows. I hope that everything goes well for you next time! Good Luck!

Thank you for all your support. I will write a letter to the ombudsman to complain. I live in Quebec, and being that it is a "free" healthcare system, and that we got all the medically needed results, we don't get a repeat US.

I did check into other clinics around Montreal, but didn't find anything else cheaper. I do know my doctor will do a great job!
